Staff Database Engineer

The team keeps the company's customer applications and infrastructure services stable in production, approaching this from an operations angle.

Engineers on this team are the final support tier for both internal and external customers.

The company wants a software engineer with deep database skills, solid performance analysis, and sharp troubleshooting, who likes tracking down problems in complex systems under live, changing load.

The work moves quickly in an inventive setting, and your decisions can shape the company and its customers.

You will learn the platform from end to end to support the infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Become the go-to expert for production database troubleshooting, performance problems on the company's platform instances, and Linux performance analysis both on premises and on hyperscaler clouds.
• Lead root cause analysis of complex incidents across multi-tenant PostgreSQL and MariaDB fleets at scale.
• Build observability and automation that keeps critical issues from coming back.
• Shape infrastructure decisions for the multi-tenant cloud platform.
• Mentor engineers and work alongside colleagues in operations, support, and development.

Requirements

• Strong experience with performance and stress testing tools and methods that simulate realistic customer usage.
• At least 5 years of database management and performance tuning.
• At least 5 years supporting or testing large-scale web-based distributed applications on containers such as Apache/Tomcat, JBoss, WebLogic, and WebSphere in a Unix environment.
• At least 3 years developing on a SaaS, PaaS, or cloud infrastructure product or solution.
• Proven work with concurrency, multithreading, and distributed system architectures.
• Unix skills covering development, navigation, file handling, permissions, searching files and text, and administrative tasks.
• Strong problem solving and analysis, and a readiness to pick up new technologies.
• Experience developing and deploying mission-critical software.
• A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or an equivalent technical field, or comparable work experience.
• An eagerness to learn everything about the company's own platform.
• 6+ years of experience across several relational databases, especially Postgres.
• Working knowledge of MVCC, transaction management, vacuum mechanics, database and query performance tuning, buffer management, WAL architecture, and backup and restore, among other areas.
• Experience using AI in work processes, decisions, or problem solving, or critically assessing how it could change them. This may include AI-powered tools, workflow automation, reviewing AI-driven insights, or judging AI's impact on the function or industry.
• Desired: basic shell scripting, Python, JavaScript, and Ansible.
• Desired: formal experience on a DevOps team (Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines), a performance team, or a support team for web-based applications.
• Desired: experience leading individual projects, including scheduling and reporting.
• Desired: formal experience on a DevOps, performance, or support team.

Conditions

Because of Government of Canada rules, the role requires successful completion of Government of Canada Reliability Status screening as a condition of employment. The screening checks 5 years of verifiable history, including identity, education, criminal record, and credit.

You must be eligible to obtain and keep Reliability Status, which generally requires Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent resident status. Employment depends on completing and maintaining that screening.

For this location, base pay is CAD 109,400-191,500, plus equity where applicable and variable or incentive pay. Base pay is a guideline, and total pay depends on qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location. Pay is based on the role's geographic location and may change.

Sales positions generally offer an On Target Earnings incentive structure.

Work persona is flexible, remote, or required in office. It depends on the nature of the work and your assigned location. The company may use a third-party service to check the distance between your home and the nearest office.
