Description

This senior staff data scientist role covers both solo work and leading cross-functional teams that build AI, ML and advanced analytics solutions with clear, measurable value for the company's business unit, part of a larger aerospace group.

The team needs someone who grasps customer needs quickly and turns them into useful, working solutions on time. You will keep the internal users of these analytics in mind throughout, apply your analytical depth, cross-domain knowledge and user experience skills, and scout new technologies worth trying. You will also guide junior colleagues.

You will be in regular contact with the customer to keep projects focused and relevant. The work is set in the company's FLIGHT DECK improvement program.

Responsibilities

  • Work with functional leaders to spot and rank AI and ML projects with real impact.
  • Support FLIGHT DECK initiatives, including Kaizens, VSMs and Gemba walks.
  • Work with local DT staff so that new solutions fit the existing business IT and data systems.
  • Translate customer requirements into practical solutions and keep the work aligned with what the customer needs.
  • Spot where change is needed and take the lead on it when it makes sense.
  • Set out how each data science team member's role supports their function.
  • Make sound decisions and keep the team moving when information is incomplete.
  • Bring ideas from many fields together and try out approaches the team has not used before.
  • Influence decisions made by SPBs and people at lower levels.
  • Act as a strong advocate for the customer and communicate clearly with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Lead and support junior team members.

Requirements

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college and have at least 5 years of professional experience, or an Associate's degree and at least 8 years of professional experience, or a High School Diploma and at least 10 years of professional experience.
  • Have at least 5 years of professional data science experience. Military service counts as professional experience.
  • Preferred qualification: Write strong Python scripts.
  • Preferred qualification: Use version control confidently, ideally GitHub.
  • Preferred qualification: Build, test and release maintainable code that follows coding standards and the analytic development process.
  • Preferred qualification: Have experience with analytics development platforms and deployed analytics architectures.
  • Preferred qualification: Apply advanced modelling methods, including combining pre-trained models with simulations or other advanced modelling.
  • Preferred qualification: Understand different approaches to model management across building and deployment.
  • Preferred qualification: Define and carry out criteria for model validation, reproducibility and deployment.
  • Preferred qualification: Reach results quickly by reusing existing scripts, recognising when a solution or set of options is good enough, and linking outputs to real-world outcomes.
  • Preferred qualification: Champion FLIGHT DECK principles and Lean processes.
  • Preferred qualification: Show a track record of defining and delivering customer value.
  • Preferred qualification: Guide and mentor others in AI, ML and programming work.
  • Preferred qualification: Work with domain experts to draw insight from large, changing, ambiguous and sometimes conflicting data.
