You will lead system development and design for highly complex solutions that are efficient and cost effective, supporting the company's business and technology initiatives.

You act as the subject matter expert for other engineers, making sure the finished product matches business expectations and that code meets company standards and security requirements.

You work with company leaders you already know and advise on engineering work, business process changes, and technology improvements.

The company is a mutual insurer owned by its policyholders in Iowa and South Dakota, with over 80 years in business. Its focus is on its members. The technology team builds modern solutions to improve the customer experience.

Title is Sr. Software Engineer, and the company is open to hiring at Lead level.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development and engineering for highly complex programs, covering preparation, coding, testing, and debugging, including workflows built on emerging technology that meet changing business needs.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for innovative, cost-effective solutions across multiple applications and systems, drawing on IT, business, and industry trends.
  • Guide and train teammates in research, root cause analysis, problem definition, solution delivery, verification, and ongoing improvement. Review defects to find root causes and help the team spot improvement opportunities.
  • Mentor colleagues in other technology areas and help them solve problems when building solutions, including how to use new or updated software.
  • Coordinate with company teams to integrate products, processes, and complex solutions. Deliver timely, accurate results and strong customer service.
  • Act as the primary consultant for leaders on business status, issues, process changes, and technology improvements.
  • Contribute to project proposals, estimates, and proof-of-concept work as needed.
  • Track industry best practices and standards, take part in industry and knowledge groups, set enterprise standards, run code reviews, and check adherence to standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or a related field, plus at least 5 years of development experience (for example Angular, NodeJS, TypeScript, C++,.NET, Java, or SQL), or 9 years of related, applicable experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with accuracy, close attention to detail, and a record of troubleshooting and building creative technical fixes for complex issues.
  • Proven experience across the software development lifecycle.
  • Ability to communicate well, coach and mentor teammates, and lead by example with a positive attitude, calm under pressure, approachability, respect, and ownership of failures.
  • Big-picture thinking that connects the company's WaaS (the company as a Service) strategy to company goals when making design and development choices.
  • Proven ability to gather information and do research for root cause analysis, define and frame problems, recommend solutions, verify them, and keep improving them, using data to back your recommendations.
  • Ability to build relationships that win support from all parties, and to share key information on time with the right audience using a suitable communication style.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced setting with shifting priorities. Strong organization and time management, meeting deadlines with little direction while keeping data accurate and complete.
  • Eagerness to learn, keep up with industry trends, and keep growing your skills.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of a team, earn trust and respect from peers, leaders, and stakeholders, and learn by listening closely and acting on coaching.
  • Ability to lead, support, and work inside a diverse development team model that includes global staffing and crowdsourcing.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree.
  • Preferred: Experience working in an Agile team.
  • Preferred: Experience working with global staffing vendors to deliver projects.

  • Preferred: Experience using GitHub for source control and building CI/CD pipelines.
  • Preferred: Strong TypeScript development experience, including scalable integration services and microservices.
