Description

The aeronautics systems group is hiring a Senior Principal Systems Safety Engineer to support the BQM-34 Targets program in Rancho Bernardo, CA.

You will use systems and safety engineering methods to find, assess and reduce hazards over the full system lifecycle, and you will plan and run safety analyses and check safety requirements and assumptions against design and test evidence.

The company values curiosity, varied thinking and a drive to tackle problems others consider out of reach.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safety engineering work across the lifecycle, covering hazard identification, analysis, tracking and mitigation.
  • Write and maintain system and subsystem safety requirements, then make sure they are allocated, built in and verified.
  • Carry out safety analyses where they apply, such as PHA, FHA, SSA, FMEA/FMECA and FTA.
  • Plan and run safety validation, including setting acceptance criteria, identifying the test and analysis data that supports them, and confirming that system behavior meets safety requirements and assumptions.
  • Work with systems, software, hardware, integration and test, and reliability teams so safety shapes design choices and verification plans.
  • Prepare safety documents and evidence, such as hazard logs, safety assessments and safety case packages, for internal reviews and customer deliverables.
  • Present safety findings, risks and recommendations to program and customer stakeholders, and help resolve safety issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering or a related STEM field, plus 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in systems engineering, systems safety engineering, or both, on complex systems.
  • Experience performing or supporting safety or reliability analyses, such as hazard analysis, FMEA/FMECA, FTA or similar.
  • Active DoD Secret clearance, and the ability to obtain and keep higher-level clearances if the program requires them.
  • Preferred: Experience with system safety on aerospace, defense or mission-critical systems, such as airborne ISR, mission systems or similar.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with system safety standards or guidance such as MIL-STD-882 or similar.
  • Preferred: Strong analytical, documentation and communication skills, and the ability to work across several engineering disciplines.
  • Preferred: Experience contributing to and presenting safety topics at systems engineering technical reviews (SETR).
  • Preferred: Familiarity with systems engineering practices such as requirements development, architecture and verification and validation, and how safety fits into them.
  • Preferred: Experience with safety, reliability or requirements management tools such as DOORS or DOORS Next, or hazard tracking tools.
  • Preferred: Experience with earned-value management systems and managing a control account.
  • Preferred: Experience with RCC-319 and range safety.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of 882E system safety engineering methodology.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of 882E, JS-SSS-EH and IG software safety engineering methodology, plus SwCI and LOR analysis.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of ESOH policies.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of HAZMAT and NAS 411-1.
  • Preferred: Understanding of US Navy system and software safety engineering policy, NAVAIRINST 5100.3H.
  • Preferred: Understanding of aircraft systems.
  • Preferred: Understanding of drone aircraft operations.
  • Preferred: Understanding of Navy NAVAIRINST 13034.1G airworthiness policy and, possibly, 516C airworthiness criteria.
