Description

The company makes advanced grid technologies for the energy sector, with the aim of a more efficient grid that can carry renewable power toward carbon neutrality.

This senior lead role sits in the team that builds tender offers for HVDC control and protection, plus related AC and secondary engineering, at the ITO stage.

You would judge how far a customer's needs depart from the standard product, and push for standard solutions that stay cost competitive.

The team assembles complete tender solutions with their documentation, and keeps standard solutions and cost data for HVDC and AC control and protection up to date.

The work suits engineers who like solving problems, on varied projects that play a real part in the energy transition.

Responsibilities

  • Study customer specifications in depth, find gaps, ask for clarification, and build a sound technical solution for HVDC and AC control and protection.
  • Lead customer meetings and workshops.
  • Plan and keep to schedules for engineering documents and cost estimates.
  • Prepare control, protection and sequencing strategy specifications.
  • Work with the systems team on AC substation single line diagrams.
  • Run early dynamic performance studies in MATLAB, PSCAD and similar tools, and help refine algorithms for power fault recovery and instability found during studies.
  • Develop and customise standard control architectures, design LAN networks, derive main IO lists through signal mapping, and confirm the hardware works with the control system.
  • Apply knowledge of networks and current protocols such as IEC 61850.
  • With the cybersecurity expert, check compliance with cybersecurity standards and how they are implemented in the network.
  • Coordinate internal and external partners to deliver a full solution with a clear split of responsibilities, and supply them with inputs such as auxiliary consumption and cubicle or equipment lists.
  • Write technical specifications for sourcing, and assess the offers received.
  • Assess risks and opportunities and propose mitigations.
  • Drive standardisation of tools, documents, solutions and equipment.
  • Mentor and train junior engineers, and act as the domain expert for technical support.
  • Follow departmental design practice, engineering reviews, guidelines, quality procedures and work instructions.
  • Cross-training across control automation, control application, protection application and secondary engineering is provided.

Requirements

  • Degree in electronics, electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience designing control and protection systems.
  • Good knowledge of electrical substations, including HV and LV equipment and auxiliary systems.
  • Solid grounding in power system protection and control.
  • Hands-on use of AutoCAD, e-base and Microsoft Visio.
  • Experience with PSCAD and MATLAB-Simulink.
  • Experience designing control systems on industrial protocols such as IEC 61850, preferably in substation or power plant settings.
  • Sense of urgency, and skill at spotting and managing technical risk.
  • Experience coaching or mentoring junior staff.
  • Strong written and spoken communication, with the ability to write and present technical reports and answer client technical questions.
  • Able to grasp and convey customer requirements.
  • Able to meet deadlines under pressure without compromising safety, quality or engineering integrity.

Conditions

Based in Berlin or Dresden.

Flexible work arrangements, including 2 to 3 days working from home per week, part-time roles and job sharing.

Relocation assistance is not offered.

Benefits

  • Join an international team in a worldwide HVDC engineering hub that is part of the grid integration business.
  • Competitive benefits.
