Description

You will join an innovation group within the company that builds early prototypes and new products for its robotic surgical platform, working from initial concept through to launch.

You will work with cross-functional colleagues, including engineers, clinicians and product managers, to design, build and integrate embedded and platform software across a complex robotic system. This covers hardware, firmware, control algorithms, vision pipelines, user interfaces and test tooling, including fault-injection and diagnostic frameworks. You will help shape the architecture and the system-level integration of new features into complete surgical robots that support release and validated human use.

The role suits someone who works well in a small, agile team, turns early ideas into working prototypes, refines designs step by step, and keeps product quality high with patient safety in mind.

Responsibilities

  • Build reliable embedded software for system infrastructure, including OS drivers, hardware interfaces, real-time data pipelines, inter-processor communication, error handling, and user and test applications.
  • Work with stakeholders across the product lifecycle to meet clinical needs and safety requirements.
  • Turn early requirements into prototypes so new robotic concepts can be evaluated and developed further.
  • Run thorough unit tests to support system integration and dependable operation.
  • Help with hazard and failure mode analysis and define suitable mitigations.
  • Revise designs while balancing technical requirements, feasibility, schedule and available resources.
  • Write clear, compliant supporting documentation that follows the company's development and quality guidelines.
  • Make sure designs meet the company's quality and safety standards under its Quality Management System.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years developing and supporting embedded systems, or 3 years plus a Master's degree, or 1 year plus a PhD.
  • Strong C/C++ skills for embedded and real-time software on multi-core, multi-processor systems, particularly embedded Linux and QNX.
  • Proven experience with board bring-up, device driver development and integrating new hardware components.
  • Comfortable with version control and shared development tools that support iterative work.
  • Working knowledge of many communication protocols, including TCP/IP, CAN, I2C and SPI, and of serialization standards such as protobuf.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills for complex embedded software and electromechanical systems.
  • In-depth understanding of failure mode and risk analysis, with a record of building safety-critical, product-focused designs.
  • Clear verbal and written communication with people at every level of the organization.
  • Genuine interest in innovation, continuous learning and building solutions that improve patients' lives.
  • Preferred skills and experience:
  • Preferred: experience with robotics and embedded software for complex electro-mechanical systems.
  • Preferred: knowledge of Python or Matlab for automation, diagnostics and testing.
  • Preferred: familiarity with FPGA development and interfaces.
  • Preferred: familiarity with CUDA programming and memory management concepts.
  • Preferred: understanding of cyber-security concepts such as secure boot, authentication and encryption.
  • Preferred: hands-on engineering experience and a proven ability to work well in a team.
  • Preferred: experience across the full product development lifecycle, including design, implementation, debug, verification, validation and transfer to manufacturing.
  • Preferred: experience designing software for a regulated industry or mission-critical applications, with familiarity with design input, design output, traceability, risk analysis and mitigations.

Conditions

You may be required to show current proof of vaccination against certain diseases, including COVID-19; requirements vary by role.

Some roles are subject to U.S. export controls. Where that applies, the offer depends on an approved export license and/or a Technology Control Plan being in place before your start date. Licensing can take 3 to 6+ months, and a Technology Control Plan typically adds 2 weeks to hiring.

Applicants with arrest and conviction records are considered in line with fair chance laws.

Candidates who do not live, or plan to live, in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina or Tennessee are given preference.
