Software Engineer, Compute

Description

The company builds compute infrastructure used by developers and AI agents. Its platform sees more than 6 million deployments a day, over 2 million Sandboxes spun up, and a trillion requests a month.

The Persistence team sits in the Compute division and owns storage and state for Builds, Sandboxes and Functions on the internal compute platform.

The team is shipping features such as fluid compute, persistent Sandboxes and custom images.

The role is based in London, UK.

Responsibilities

• Operate and improve clusters running 100s of instances in every region where customers deploy and run code.
• Write Golang every day and provision infrastructure with Terraform. Nomad handles scheduling of workloads.
• Rethink low-level primitives such as virtual filesystems, Linux internals and virtualisation.
• Own reliability and performance of the compute platform, including on-call cover, where each change affects a large number of users.
• Work with other teams to bring all compute at the company together.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience. Golang is strongly preferred.
• Deep hands-on knowledge of virtual machines, file systems and Linux. Familiarity with tools such as tcpdump, strace and iptables helps.
• Experience building and running distributed systems at scale, designing for performance and reliability.
• Experience with schedulers and orchestrators for containers and non-containerised workloads, such as Nomad or Kubernetes.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills, and enjoyment of problems without obvious answers.
• Bonus: experience with low-level virtualisation or sandbox execution environments.
• Bonus: product engineering background and a focus on how infrastructure decisions affect developers.
• Bonus: experience with on-call operations for large-scale distributed systems.
