Description

The company trains frontier models, runs a fine-tuning platform that lets customers shape models to their own needs, and builds interfaces for communicating with AI.

The team needs an engineer to govern data across the company: what is collected or acquired, where it is stored, which people and systems can reach it, how long it is kept, and how it feeds training, evaluation, and products.

You will build the systems that protect privacy and let the company make firm statements about its practices, covering inventory, classification, access and purpose controls, retention, deletion, and audit.

You will also work with researchers and product engineers on privacy questions that have no standard answer.

This role treats privacy as an engineering problem, not a checklist. Hard cases include honoring a deletion request against a trained model, keeping customer fine-tuning data isolated and used only for that customer, and deciding when to deidentify data versus applying differential privacy. You will weigh privacy against model quality, research speed, and product value, choose a position you can defend, and build it.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce privacy and governance across internal systems by building classification tags, retention jobs, deletion pipelines, and classifiers, and wiring them into existing systems.
  • Build isolation so customer and user data stays separate and protected, including customer training data for the fine-tuning platform and conversations on the company's interfaces.
  • Review new data sources, training runs, and features for privacy risk through threat models, and finish each review by shipping the control, check, or tooling rather than only a recommendation.
  • Turn legal and policy obligations such as GDPR, CCPA, and contract terms into code, using policy-as-code, CI checks, and pipeline enforcement that you build and maintain.
  • Own shared libraries and guardrails that make the private path the default, and repair them when they break or fall out of date.

Requirements

  • Minimum qualifications
  • Have built and shipped a production privacy or data governance system, such as a retention or deletion pipeline, policy engine, catalog or lineage system, or consent system, and have run it in production, not only designed it.
  • Have written production code in Python or a comparable language and can walk through a system in detail: what it does, how it fails, and how you debugged it.
  • Have enforced privacy or governed data in an AI/ML pipeline (training, fine-tuning, inference, or evaluation) and can name a specific privacy risk you identified or reduced.
  • Have chosen a pragmatic control over an ideal one on a real system and can describe what you shipped.
  • Have written a technical requirement or control from a legal or policy obligation such as GDPR or CCPA, and can name both the obligation and the control.
  • Preferred qualifications
  • Preferred: Experience at an AI lab or with ML infrastructure, such as training data curation, multi-tenant fine-tuning platforms, or inference systems that handle user data.
  • Preferred: Has implemented a privacy-enhancing technique (deidentification, differential privacy, or secure enclaves) in a real system and can describe where it fell short.
  • Preferred: Experience building data lineage, metadata, or policy-engine tooling, or large-scale deletion and retention systems.
  • Preferred: Background in security engineering, or direct work with a security team on access control implementation.
  • Preferred: Was one of the first engineers building out a privacy function and can name the specific systems personally built, not only the program run.

The expected annual salary range is $300,000 - $350,000 USD, depending on background, skills, and experience.
