Description

The company offers apprenticeships of 2 to 4 years across STEM and business routes, combining paid training with on-the-job learning and support for academic study through to qualifications, with pay rising as you progress.

This role is a four-year software engineering apprenticeship based in Edinburgh, leading to graduate level. You will work through a mix of work-based learning and day release at university, and gain the academic requirements toward Incorporated Engineer status, which is part of the route to Chartered Engineer.

Each site has a member of the apprentice team who helps you progress, protects your study time, gives access to digital learning, and connects you with local community and STEM projects. You will rotate across the business on live projects alongside experienced engineers, and the team helps you settle in from day one.

The apprenticeship is designed for people with very little software knowledge. It is not suitable for anyone who already holds a computing or software degree.

The company is looking for people who communicate well, work effectively in a team and on their own, and stay committed to solving hard problems. Interest in IT and some technical aptitude in software are expected, whether from a hobby, building an app or website, or programming.

Responsibilities

  • Learn to program and to design, integrate and test high-integrity software in C++
  • Work through all stages of the software development lifecycle and learn how other engineering departments support software engineers
  • Study subjects including the hardware-software interface, data communication, networking and security, software configuration and release management, business, personal skills and project management
  • Complete a BSc (Hons) in Software Development for Business
  • On completion, work as a highly qualified software engineer on advanced avionics systems, such as the radar for the Typhoon jet

Requirements

  • Five Higher grades (or equivalent) at BBBBC or better, including Mathematics, which is mandatory
  • Physics and Computing are preferred but not required
  • National 5 grade A to C in English, or an equivalent qualification
  • Be interested in IT and show a technical aptitude for software development
  • Be ready to learn quickly, solve problems with patience, and follow safety instructions and process compliance at all times
  • Show drive and commitment to delivering results, sometimes on your own initiative, and to completing the programme and its learning objectives

Conditions

In teaching semesters, attend university classes, seminars and labs one day a week, with another day set aside for university projects and assignments

University attendance is mandatory and counts as a normal working day

The starting salary is £23,500
