Software Engineer (Full-stack)

Description

The company runs a shopping app and web shop where people buy from thousands of products across hundreds of brands, with one checkout and credit back on purchases.

The team is hiring a full-stack engineer whose main focus is the backend: catalog, search and recommendations, checkout and payments, and ads.

You will work across the app, the web shop and the systems behind them. What you build reaches shoppers within the same week.

Success looks like weekly feature releases with tests and few breakages, measurably faster pages and feeds, a catalog that stays accurate as brands are added, and payments and credit that reconcile exactly.

Responsibilities

• Build features from the API through to the app and the web.
• Keep the catalog synced with each brand's store, including prices, stock, options and photos.
• Build checkout, payments, refunds and the credit ledger, keeping the money exactly correct.
• Improve search and recommendations, from ranking through to the feeds shoppers open daily.
• Make screens feel fast.
• Own deployments, testing and monitoring so the team ships daily without breaking things.
• Keep ads, budgets and credit accurate and resistant to gaming.

Requirements

• 2+ years building backend systems for a product people use, or 1+ year as an early engineer at a startup.
• Strong in at least one major programming language and in relational databases, including schema design, constraints, transactions, migrations and indexes you can explain.
• Careful with money, with a working grasp of idempotency, retries and reconciling against a payment provider.
• Have owned work end to end at a startup or small team, not just a slice of a large codebase.
• Consider what a change means for shoppers and brands, not only the code.
• Name tradeoffs, ask questions and accept correction without ego.
• Prefer reading logs to guessing, and enjoy seeing your work used the same day.
• Background in search or recommendation engines.
• Experience with payment or marketplace products.
• Experience building for iOS.
• Exposure to ad systems, auction mechanics or fraud detection.
• Side projects or open-source work with real users.
