Description

You will join the computing platforms and multisystem hardware/software integration group, part of a newly created systems domain within the aircraft systems competence centre.

That domain brings together expertise from the multisystem and IMA design office and the airborne computing platforms team, and drives reuse, strategic alignment and scale across the centre. The group standardises embedded software and computing platforms.

As a senior engineer, you will lead the centre's computing platform strategy and deliver robust, certifiable, high-performance software. You will also handle hardware/software integration for multisystem architectures that will power the next generation of the company's airborne systems.

Responsibilities

  • Write and maintain software requirements specifications for safety-critical onboard computers.
  • Design, build and verify software artifacts to RTCA DO-178C, up to DAL-A.
  • Define full software platform architectures for multisystem computing platforms, covering partitioning, scheduling and resource allocation, plus integration of third-party application code and low-level software such as RTOS board support packages, drivers and middleware.
  • Create common APIs that give design and development offices standard access to platform support software, including RTOS, BSP, low-level I/O and middleware.
  • Build new embeddable capabilities such as secure math functions, robust file system services, and time and logging services, in support of the communalisation strategy.
  • Share ownership of the platform software certification effort, working with certification authorities to show DO-178C compliance.
  • Run trade-off studies, technical benchmarks and rapid prototypes on reference boards to support the centre's strategy.
  • Help evaluate and bring up new target platforms, with a focus on multicore architectures.

Requirements

  • Advanced C for real-time embedded systems, with GNU toolchains and modern or legacy compilers such as GCC, Clang/LLVM and Diab.
  • Strong background in ARM, PowerPC or x86 and SoC architectures, including MMUs, caches, memory hierarchies and pipelining.
  • Expert knowledge of avionics data buses, both legacy (ARINC-429, MIL-STD-1553B, CAN) and modern (AFDX, TSN), plus analog and discrete I/O.
  • Extensive experience with low-speed peripherals (UART, SPI, I2C), high-speed PCIe and DMA.
  • Advanced knowledge of safety-critical RTOS and the ARINC-653 specification, with hands-on COTS experience such as Wind River VxWorks 653, PikeOS, Green Hills Integrity or DEOS.
  • In-depth knowledge of RTCA DO-178C and RTCA DO-330.
  • Python for automating CI/CD and hardware setup, and a solid grasp of JSON and XML serialisation.
  • Professional negotiation-level English.
  • Proactive, highly autonomous and comfortable owning your work.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving approach.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in complex, cross-functional teams.
  • Awareness of potential compliance risks and a commitment to acting with integrity.
  • Valuable: embedded Linux driver development and platform software for mission or safety-critical Linux systems.
  • Valuable: UML, and hands-on use of SysML tools such as Cameo or IBM Rhapsody.
  • Valuable: static analysis (Polyspace, SciTools Understand) and structural code coverage (LDRA).
  • Valuable: processor performance monitor counters and hardware event monitors, especially for multicore resource contention and interference mitigation.
  • Valuable: Agile work using Jira and Confluence.

Conditions
