Description

The company is a global technology business focused on moving and managing money across borders. This role sits in the Treasury FX function and spans the Market Data and Risk Engineering teams.

The team builds real-time infrastructure for FX pricing, risk, and trade execution. It ingests Bloomberg and Reuters market data, calculates live exposure and VaR, and places hedges worth tens to hundreds of millions of pounds each day to shield the business from adverse currency moves.

The systems are Tier-1, serve 50+ internal consumers, and deliver sub-second freshness across 50+ currency pairs.

You will be the technical lead across both teams, setting the architecture for 14+ production services that run from rate ingestion and distribution, through real-time risk calculation, to automated hedge execution.

Your main goal is the company's first semi-automated trade and hedge execution platform, built closely with FX dealers, quant researchers, and treasury controllers.

The team values automation, programmatic work, and reusable design. You will need to see the wider ecosystem and also stay hands-on to help build the design, working with resources across the Finance & Treasury group.

The stack is Java 21 with Spring Boot 4.x, Python 3.12, Apache Flink for streaming, Kafka, gRPC with Protobuf, and Bloomberg and Reuters real-time feeds. This is real-time financial infrastructure rather than standard CRUD work, where a 1bps gain in hedging efficiency saves millions.

You will join as the technical anchor for both FX engineering teams, providing architectural leadership and deep systems expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical direction and long-term architecture of the FX engineering stack.
  • Design a semi-automated hedge execution platform covering exposure breakdown, model-based hedge proposals, and programmatic trades with external partners.
  • Build real-time Flink pipelines for portfolio-split exposure computation, tenor interpolation, and hedge lifecycle event processing.
  • Scale rate infrastructure to 10x throughput, adding FX Forwards, new corridors, and NDFs, and build cross-provider deviation alerts.
  • Build production systems for quant models covering VaR, beta-adjusted exposure management, dynamic pricing, and FRP cancellations.
  • Design Kafka topics and manage schema changes across the full flow from rate ingestion to risk calculation, trade execution, and analytics.
  • Lead the technical roadmap across both teams, mentor IC2 and IC3 engineers, and lead incident response for Tier-1 critical services.

Requirements

  • The company accepts that skills grow over time and supports your development, but expects you to bring these core skills now.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in financial systems, trading, or real-time data.
  • Deep Java (17+) skills with Spring Boot in high-throughput production settings.
  • Extensive hands-on work with Apache Kafka, including topic design, schema evolution, and consumer group management at scale.
  • Strong data engineering background building real-time streaming pipelines with Apache Flink, Kafka Streams, or similar.
  • A record of designing and running distributed systems that process millions of events per day.
  • Proven ability to own reliability end to end: SLOs, alerting, incident response, and disaster recovery.
  • Experience leading the technical design of complex multi-service architectures and driving decisions without direct authority.
  • A strong product mindset, turning requirements from traders, operations staff, and quants into technical strategy.
  • A history of mentoring senior and junior engineers and raising engineering standards across a team.

Conditions

Starting salary of £111,000-£145,000 plus RSUs.

The company is committed to diverse, equitable and inclusive teams and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds.

Benefits

  • The company offers its standard benefits package.
