Senior Software Engineer (f/m/d) Block Storage Provisioning

IONOS Cloud block storage has to be provisioned quickly, reliably and at scale, on highly available and redundant storage. You will own the software behind it and build on the Linux storage stack rather than replace it, with provisioning as your main focus.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and improve the current block storage provisioning.
• Design and build the next generation of storage provisioning.
• Add monitoring and alerts to the provisioning workflow so failures surface early.
• Make provisioning resilient to failures and safe to retry.
• Design and implement provisioning that keeps storage highly available and redundant, including failover.
• Investigate and fix complex problems across the storage stack, from the Linux kernel up to the provisioning layer.
• Move away from legacy components step by step without disrupting existing users.

Requirements

• Expert-level Go and several years of professional development experience.
• Deep understanding of Linux, covering the kernel, block storage, software RAID (MD), LVM and network block devices (NBD, RNBD).
• Experience with virtual machines (libvirt, QEMU, cloud-init), building VM images and developing Kubernetes Operators.
• Working knowledge of C, enough to read and debug low-level code.
• Fluency with Git, Docker, shell scripting and CI/CD, including GitOps workflows such as ArgoCD.
• Experience using observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana to monitor provisioning and troubleshoot issues.
• Experience building highly available, redundant systems, including replication, failover and distributed-systems basics such as idempotency, retries, consistency and failure handling.
• An affinity for cloud environments and for automating infrastructure provisioning.
• Daily use of AI coding assistants, such as Claude, in your development work.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a structured, independent way of working within a team.
