Description

The company is HP IQ's new AI innovation lab, a team of engineers, designers, researchers and product people building intelligent, adaptive tools that make work simpler and more creative.

This is a software engineer role on the device security team, based in San Francisco, CA.

You will help build secure, privacy-focused features for the next generation of AI-enabled devices, working with security, firmware, operating system, hardware and cloud engineers to protect customer data.

The work covers embedded systems, PCs and server-class workstations. You will gain hands-on experience in secure boot, cryptography, device identity, secure communication and data protection, contributing across the development lifecycle.

The role suits an engineer with a solid software background who wants to deepen their device security skills on complex, real-world problems.

Responsibilities

  • Build and roll out security features for embedded and connected devices, such as secure boot, key management, encryption, device identity and data protection.
  • Help design and write secure software components using established security architectures and best practices.
  • Work with CoreOS, firmware, design, hardware and cloud services engineers to bring security into the company's AI products.
  • Write and maintain code in C, C++, Java or related languages across embedded, AOSP, Linux or Windows systems.
  • With guidance from experienced engineers, contribute to TrustZone, TEE, kernel-level or other hardware-backed security work.
  • Build secure channels between devices and services that protect sensitive and personal data.
  • Support secure data flows across device boundaries, including work with biometric sensors and other hardware.
  • Take part in threat modelling, security reviews, vulnerability analysis, testing and remediation.
  • Apply secure SDLC practices at every stage of development.
  • Investigate security problems and system-level faults, and help build fixes that improve security and reliability.

Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, cybersecurity or a related technical field, or have equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Have 2 to 4 years of professional software engineering experience, typically including embedded systems, operating systems, firmware or security development.
  • Program in C, C++, Java or a similar systems language.
  • Understand core device security concepts such as secure boot, cryptography, authentication, access control, PKI or application sandboxing.
  • Have developed or debugged software in embedded, Linux, AOSP, Windows or similar environments.
  • Know software development basics: debugging, testing, code review, source control and SDLC practices.
  • Collaborate well with engineers and cross-functional partners to solve technical problems.
  • Show a strong interest in growing your expertise in device security, cryptography, privacy and secure systems.
  • Preferred: experience or coursework in embedded systems, consumer electronics, IoT, operating systems, firmware or device security.
  • Preferred: familiarity with AOSP or Linux security technologies such as TrustZone, TEE, Android Verified Boot (AVB), Keystore or SELinux.
  • Preferred: understanding of common cryptographic concepts, authentication mechanisms, certificates or PKI.
  • Preferred: exposure to hardware-backed security, secure elements, TPMs, biometric systems or trusted execution environments.
  • Preferred: experience with security testing, vulnerability analysis, threat modelling or secure coding practices.
  • Preferred: familiarity with privacy and security frameworks or standards such as GDPR, CCPA or ISO.
  • Preferred: curiosity and a drive to keep learning in security, privacy, embedded systems and emerging technology.
