Description

This posting fills an existing vacancy.

The role sits in Analytical Data Science, part of Product Development Data Sciences (PDD). The team sets scientific standards across development, produces data-driven insights and finds ways to scale solutions across the portfolio.

The group is an agile team of experienced talent that meets regulatory commitments across the portfolio, adopts digital and automation tools, and aligns statistical programming from early to late clinical development.

The Data Science Acceleration (DSX) team builds scalable tools, environments and workflows for statistical computing across PDD. Its focus is automating programming, creating reusable macros and advanced data visualization, working with statistical programmers, biostatisticians and clinical scientists to deliver faster, more reliable evidence.

Responsibilities

  • Set the technical vision and architecture for the next generation of statistical computing platforms serving PDD and the wider organization.
  • Track emerging technologies, industry trends and regulatory changes, and turn them into forward-looking capabilities, frameworks and standards.
  • Lead large cross-functional programs that change how clinical, operational and real-world data are processed, visualized and interpreted.
  • Advise platform owners, programming and statistical leaders, and governance teams on infrastructure, automation and scientific computing.
  • Guide architecture, technical direction and resource planning for high-impact tooling and infrastructure projects across DSX.
  • Solve complex, system-level problems using deep scientific computing knowledge.
  • Shape internal policy and development standards, and drive best practices across teams, functions and regions.
  • Explain complex technical ideas to senior stakeholders and inform decisions on investment, tooling strategy and portfolio priorities.
  • Build a culture of technical excellence through mentoring, internal community building and knowledge sharing.

Requirements

  • Hold a PhD or Master's degree in computer science, data science, statistics, bioinformatics, engineering or a related quantitative field.
  • Have at least 10 years of experience in data science, statistical computing or platform development, with a record of impact across the organization or across functions.
  • Be a recognized expert in building and scaling scientific or statistical software, with a solid grasp of clinical research and its regulatory implications.
  • Work fluently in several programming environments, such as Python and R, and apply practices for reproducible, compliant, high-performance computing.
  • Have led major programs or cross-functional initiatives that are technically complex and strategically important.
  • Think independently and make sound decisions based on principles.
  • Bring strategic agility, including strong problem solving, critical thinking and skills beyond the technical domain.
  • Respect cultural differences when working with colleagues across the global workplace.
  • Communicate clearly in speech and writing, influence senior stakeholders and explain technical strategy with confidence.
  • Have proven experience leading global cross-functional projects, coordinating across time zones and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Preferred: Experience shaping the architecture and long-term roadmap of enterprise-scale data science or statistical computing platforms.
  • Preferred: Track record of influencing regulatory and quality frameworks for digital and analytical tools.
  • Preferred: Understanding of healthcare data ecosystems, including real-world data, translational pipelines and high-dimensional data integration.
  • Preferred: Ability to drive tool adoption and cultural change through technical leadership, stakeholder engagement and thoughtful design.
  • Preferred: Engagement with external scientific or developer communities, such as open-source work, industry consortia or conference presentations.
  • Preferred: Experience guiding investment and resourcing decisions for high-impact tooling or analytics initiatives.
  • Preferred: Ability to combine organizational priorities into technically sound solutions at scale.
