Description

You must already hold an active TS/SCI security clearance.

You will be the team's main database expert, working alongside software developers and systems engineers to keep databases running reliably while improving their performance, design, security and upkeep.

The company runs PostgreSQL for both transactional and analytical workloads and deploys applications on OpenShift. The right person enjoys practical database problems, can troubleshoot operational issues without much help, and can propose and carry out changes to how databases are built, deployed, watched and maintained.

Responsibilities

  • Run PostgreSQL day to day: configuration, accounts, roles, permissions, routine upkeep, patching, upgrades and troubleshooting.
  • Shape schemas, data models, indexes and access patterns so applications perform well and can grow as requirements change.
  • Study SQL and execution plans to find slow spots, then tune queries, indexes, configuration and resource use.
  • Work with platform and application teams on deploying, connecting, configuring and monitoring PostgreSQL inside OpenShift.
  • Build and maintain backup and restore routines, test recovery, and keep high availability, replication and disaster recovery working.
  • Set up and look after monitoring, logs, alerts, capacity tracking and operational reports so problems are caught early.
  • Advise developers on schema design, SQL, transactions, data access and integration.
  • Look for gains in performance, reliability, scale and maintainability, assess tools, and deliver practical fixes.
  • Plan and run upgrades, migrations, configuration changes and modernization work with low risk and little downtime.
  • Write up architecture, configurations, security controls, runbooks and good engineering practice.
  • Apply access controls, least privilege, auditing and security practice that match customer and system rules.
  • Act as the primary database technical resource for the engineering team, helping with issues and with design and operations decisions.

Requirements

  • Active TS/SCI clearance, plus the ability to obtain and keep a polygraph.
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology or a related technical field, or equivalent learning, certifications and experience.
  • 5+ years in database administration, engineering, architecture or a similar technical role.
  • Hands-on PostgreSQL administration and support.
  • Solid grounding in relational design, data modeling, SQL, schemas, indexing and query tuning.
  • Skill at troubleshooting database faults and managing users, roles, permissions and settings.
  • Experience with backups, restores, upgrades and routine maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of high availability, replication and disaster recovery.
  • Ability to work with developers and infrastructure engineers to fix problems and improve system speed.
  • Strong analysis, troubleshooting, writing and communication skills.
  • Preferred: experience running PostgreSQL on OpenShift, Kubernetes, containers or Linux.
  • Preferred: experience with PostgreSQL replication, failover, connection pooling or high availability tools.
  • Preferred: monitoring, logging, alerting and performance diagnostics.
  • Preferred: work with both transactional and analytical workloads.
  • Preferred: automation, scripting, infrastructure as code or repeatable deployments.
  • Preferred: planning and running migrations, upgrades and modernization.
  • Preferred: database security practice in regulated or classified settings.
  • Preferred: Oracle administration or Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migration.
  • Preferred: CompTIA Security+ or an equivalent, as the customer environment requires.

Conditions

On site at the customer location.

Sponsorship for the polygraph may be provided.

PostgreSQL is the primary database technology, and the application platform is OpenShift. Oracle knowledge helps but is not a requirement.

Pay is typically $145-155k, set by education, experience, certifications and other factors, and may fall outside that range.

Applicant information is handled confidentially under EEO guidelines.

Benefits

  • Health, dental and vision coverage, 401(k) match, accrued PTO, STD, LTD and life insurance, referral bonuses, professional development reimbursement, and more.
