Senior Manager, Machine Learning Engineering

The Advertiser Optimization team sits within the company Ads, the company's advertising business, and builds the systems that run bidding, budget pacing, and user targeting for advertising partners.

The team includes engineers and applied research scientists, and its work supports advertiser results, a good experience for shoppers, and company revenue.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of engineers and applied research scientists.
• Mentor team members, help them build career development plans, and support their growth.
• Build a culture of innovation and continuous improvement that matches company goals and engineering standards.
• Review team performance regularly, give direct feedback, and promote a collaborative, inclusive team.
• Form partnerships with data science, infrastructure, and other technical teams so software and machine learning work fit together.
• Set the long-term technical direction for auto-bidding, budget pacing, and user targeting.
• Scout emerging technologies and bring the useful ones into product features.
• Manage the technical side of major projects and deal with risks early.
• Lead delivery of key projects and set team processes that raise delivery speed, quality, and stability, with few incidents.
• Turn complex algorithms into practical solutions, set backlog priorities, and work with product managers so engineering matches market needs.

Requirements

• A master's degree in computer science, operations research, applied mathematics, control systems, computational economics, or a closely related quantitative field.
• 7+ years of software development experience.
• 2+ years of software engineering management experience.
• Experience with digital advertising platforms, real-time bidding, budget pacing, and user targeting.
• A proven record of technical leadership in building software products.
• Evidence of creating new technical solutions that drove business results.
• Working knowledge of data science, optimization, and machine learning methods.
• Preferred: a PhD in computer science, operations research, applied mathematics, control systems, computational economics, or a closely related quantitative field.
• Preferred: 4+ years of software engineering management experience.
• Preferred: experience building machine learning models and solutions.

Conditions

This is a remote role.

Base pay depends on your permanent work location. Ranges for US candidates: CA, NY, CT, NJ: $275,000 - $290,500 USD; WA: $264,000 - $278,500 USD; OR, DE, ME, MA, MD, NH, RI, VT, DC, PA, VA, CO, TX, IL, HI: $253,000 - $267,000 USD; all other states: $230,000 - $242,500 USD.

Final offers depend on factors such as your experience and the skills the role needs.
