Senior Manager, Engineering

Description

The team owns the observability systems that collect operational metrics, dashboards, logs, traces and alerts, so customers can track the performance and health of their database deployments.

Tens of thousands of customers rely on these systems to watch their clusters and send alerts that protect critical workloads. Demand for high-cardinality data keeps growing as the platform and its infrastructure expand, so the systems must scale further. They already handle 10s of billions of metrics time series and petabytes of logs, traces and events.

This is a senior leadership role for someone who is results-focused, holds high standards, and has managed large teams of engineers or engineering managers. You will have designed, built and run complex distributed systems at scale, with strict SLOs for security, durability, availability and performance.

The company has over 67,000 customers, including AI-native startups and approximately 75% of the Fortune 100. Its cloud data platform is globally distributed and available on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

Success milestones: within 1 month, you will know the core system, its current features and the team's projects. Within 3 months, you will contribute to the design and development of team projects and help the team grow. Within 6 months, you and your team will take on medium-sized projects, you will lead the team toward its product and engineering goals, and you will support customers during escalations and join the on-call rotation.

Responsibilities

• Lead and coach a team of up to 10 individual contributors who want to learn and grow.
• Shape the design, infrastructure and architecture of the high-volume ingestion systems your team builds.
• Partner with product managers, program managers and other engineering teams to define, rank and ship new features for internal and external users.
• Estimate task complexity, track progress and raise risks for the team's projects.
• Help customers and support engineers resolve issues, and take part in the on-call rotation.
• With the team and other engineering managers, improve the health, design principles and practices of the codebase and on-call process.
• Set best practices for monitoring, reliability and performance of observability services in production.
• Take part in hiring to grow the team.

Requirements

• You have at least 8 years of professional software development experience.
• You have at least 4 years of people management experience, including performance management.
• You have managed large teams or groups of engineering managers.
• You have led teams that built, designed and maintained large-scale systems.
• You have delivered operationally sound systems and can give examples of a high standard of engineering excellence.
• You have experience with at least one major cloud provider, such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
• You enjoy hard problems and helping engineers work through difficult production outages.
• You communicate well.
• You are curious, collaborative and motivated.
