Description

The company is a consumer energy platform where homeowners can find, buy, finance, install, monitor and manage home energy products and services in one place. It covers solar, battery storage, HVAC, heat pumps and more, and serves hundreds of thousands of homeowners across 30+ states.

You will lead the data engineering team that makes the company's data usable by product teams, finance, operations, partners and AI agents. Much of the data currently sits in reporting dashboards. Your team is building a platform that lets products and AI tools query that data directly, with proper access controls, audit trails and good speed. The goal is one consistent view of the full customer journey, from sales and lending through installation, interconnection and years of production data.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow the data engineering team: hire, develop and retain strong engineers, set clear expectations, give honest feedback and build career paths so that no system depends on a single person.
  • Set the roadmap in line with company objectives, weigh trade-offs openly, state what the team will not do, and deliver cross-team projects on time and on budget.
  • Set the target architecture for ingestion, modeling, the semantic layer and governance, and review designs. Write code when it helps.
  • Be accountable for the platform's outcomes: reliable pipelines with clear SLAs, one consistent set of metric definitions, and data ready for agents whose answers trace back to source.
  • Be accountable for the secure serving layer and APIs. Your team designs and builds them; you set priorities and standards.
  • Evaluate data platform and tooling vendors, negotiate and sign contracts within your approval limit, and keep warehouse and tooling costs under control.
  • Work with finance, operations, sales, marketing and product to understand their changing data needs and bring concrete recommendations to business owners.
  • This is a player-coach role. You set priorities and hold the bar, stay close enough to the work to shape architecture and review designs, and write code when useful. You are accountable for platform outcomes.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in software or data engineering, including 5+ years managing engineers.
  • A track record of hiring well, developing people and building strong teams.
  • Experience designing enterprise data architecture (warehouse, modeling, lineage, governance) and leading architecture reviews.
  • Hands-on work with a modern warehouse and transformation tool such as Snowflake, BigQuery or dbt, plus strong SQL and enough fluency in a backend language such as Python to review and contribute.
  • You use coding agents in your own work and have brought agentic practices to a team, beyond basic prompting.
  • Working knowledge of production APIs, authorization, access control and PII handling.
  • A record of delivering data platform projects across multiple teams, including deciding what not to build.
  • Experience building consensus with partners outside engineering, such as finance, capital markets and accounting.
  • Experience preparing governed data for AI consumers, with answers that trace back to source.
  • Experience evaluating vendors and negotiating contracts.
