Description

The AI Engineering group at the company has an open role in Sunnyvale, CA for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer focused on computer vision, deep learning, generative AI and robotics, helping build technology for next-generation robot-assisted surgery platforms.

The team is newly formed and small, with a high-energy, focused pace. You will start new research directions, hold research to a high standard, and share both responsibility and reward with the group.

The role offers a challenging problem-solving setting where you can put your knowledge to work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead research, design and implementation of AI algorithms for computer vision (image and video analysis), multimodal data and action models.
  • Work on surgical AI and robotics pipelines, integrating and testing vision action (VA) and vision language action (VLA) models and finding where their accuracy falls short.
  • Lead the creation of techniques and infrastructure, taking ideas through to working prototypes and products.
  • Contribute to research projects building algorithms and systems in computer vision, robotics and multimodal data fusion.
  • Push the state of the art forward, including patents and publications.
  • Build validation methods, datasets, pipelines and evaluation metrics that show the approach scales to large clinical datasets.
  • Help integrate new ML and CV algorithms into current and future robotic platforms.
  • Work with users and clinical advisors to refine prototypes using their feedback and performance results.
  • Build new technologies and digital products that improve the performance of surgeons and surgical teams on robotic platforms.
  • Support academic collaborations in related fields.

Requirements

  • Either a Master's degree with at least 6 years of industry experience building computer vision and machine learning applications, or a PhD in computer science, electrical and computer engineering or a related field with at least 3 years of experience.
  • Strong experience building learning systems end to end: data collection, training, evaluation and iterative improvement.
  • A strong publication record at conferences such as CVPR, ICCV and MICCAI.
  • Strong hands-on experience with at least one mainstream deep learning framework, such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Proficiency in Python and C/C++, plus hands-on shell scripting.
  • Familiarity with control systems, robotics, kinematics and dynamics.
  • Strong engineering practice, debugging and profiling skills, and familiarity with multi-threaded programming.
  • Strong hands-on experience with GPU-accelerated algorithms and implementations.
  • Strong hands-on experience with state-of-the-art AI models, VFMs or vision action models.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Comfortable with early-stage product exploration and iterating when requirements are incomplete.
  • Solid understanding of computer vision, machine learning, generative models and deep learning.
  • Experience with visualization tools is a plus.
  • Self-starter who works well in a collaborative, results-driven setting.
  • Able to travel domestically and internationally, 5-15% of the time.
  • Able to watch live and recorded surgical procedures.
