Senior Java Engineer

The team is Distributed Systems, within the search engine group. It focuses on scale, performance, and resilience, especially for the company's Serverless offering. The work centers on how nodes in a cluster communicate and how data is indexed, allocated, and managed across them.

The company is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for this team.

Responsibilities

• Build and run core parts of the next-generation Serverless search offering, affecting customers around the world.
• Improve the components that let indexing run concurrently and consistently across multiple machines.
• Maintain the cluster coordination system so performance holds as nodes join and leave and data moves, while keeping the system safe and live.
• Push the limits on how many shards, nodes, and petabytes the search engine can handle.
• Investigate performance and concurrency issues and propose solutions.
• Help support engineers with the hardest problems.
• Own operational investigations from start to finish until performance or stability problems are resolved.

Requirements

• Deep background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms.
• Strong core Java, including the standard library's data structures and concurrency tools, plus newer language features.
• Deep technical proficiency in algorithms.
• Experience understanding and building complex, highly distributed systems yourself, not just using off-the-shelf services.
• Track record of building and debugging features with broad impact that run across multiple machines.
• Ability to own a project from start to finish, including the technical design and working with others to build what is needed.
• Proven record of using AI to speed up development, debug complex systems, and optimize code, while still owning the final result.
• Ability to work across functions and teams and move between projects, codebases, or teams as business priorities change.
• Ability to work autonomously, drive decisions and results in a distributed team, and communicate asynchronously, directly, and transparently.
• Bonus: experience with data stores.
• Bonus: experience with search, analytics, or Lucene.
• Bonus: strong knowledge of the JDK.
• Bonus: experience with asynchronous, event-driven network frameworks such as Netty.
