Description

The grid was built for predictable, centralised power. It now absorbs intermittent solar and wind, plus demand from EVs, heat pumps and home batteries. Connecting and coordinating these devices at scale takes software, and that is the gap the company fills.

The company sits between the home and the grid. Its platform connects assets, coordinates homes and treats thousands of them as one. Energy retailers get a single API covering 1,000+ device models from 100+ brands. Coordination makes home energy use smarter, such as charging an EV in the cheapest hours or using more of your own solar. Connected homes combine into a dispatchable resource the grid can rely on.

Large European energy companies, including retailers, utilities and the teams that trade for them, build on the platform. It covers 1.7M+ connected households and 5,000+ MW of controllable load. Backers include Y Combinator, Lowercarbon Capital and Creandum.

Decisions made now will shape the next grid. The company wants people who take ownership, reason clearly through complexity and care about building software that matters.

AI is central to how the small team works and keeps changing its habits. Candidates should reach for AI by default, be willing to drop approaches that no longer work, and help colleagues get unblocked as well as ship their own work. If you are heading that way but not there yet, still get in touch. This is assessed in interviews alongside everything else.

You report to Daniël, Head of Design, and join a small senior design team working across product and brand. What you build goes live.

Responsibilities

  • Build and ship production UI for the platform, the connection flow and the website, working directly in the codebases.
  • Build the interfaces that energy retailers and their developers use: the platform where they integrate and debug, the flow customers follow to connect a car or heat pump, and the company website.
  • Turn designs into production-ready code, prototype ideas before they become designs, and help maintain the design system that keeps everything consistent.
  • Contribute to the design system in code alongside front-end engineers: components, tokens and documentation, kept in sync with Figma, Claude and other tooling.
  • Prototype in code to test ideas with customers and the team before anyone commits to a direction.
  • Raise the standard for interaction, motion, accessibility and performance across everything shipped.
  • Work with engineering on how front-end work is built, reviewed and released, so design and code stay aligned.
  • Help engineering teams design APIs and changes to them, so what developers build on is clear and easy to use.
  • Build tools and prototypes that help design and engineering collaborate, and help shape how the team uses AI.

Requirements

  • You care about the last 10% of an interface: the timing of a transition, the edge case in an empty state, spacing that is 2px off. You also want your work to help people choose electric.
  • 5+ years building user interfaces in a design engineering, front-end or design-focused engineering role.
  • Deep knowledge of React and TypeScript, with a strong grasp of HTML, CSS and accessibility.
  • A solid understanding of APIs: you can read the docs, build on real data, know what developers need and have a view on how APIs should be designed.
  • A portfolio showing both things you designed and things you built.
  • A year or more of using AI in design and engineering work, pushing its limits, with a clear view of where it helps and where it does not.
  • Experience contributing to a design system that people actually use.
  • You can work on your own and take a rough idea to a shipped feature without a detailed spec.
  • You explain design decisions to engineers and technical constraints to designers, and keep the overall picture in mind.
  • Excellent written communication. The team is remote-first, so writing well matters.

Conditions

Designers work mostly with their own engineers, often alongside a product manager. The designers meet every Monday to sync and share work, team up on projects when it makes sense, and hold quick huddles when someone wants feedback.

AI is part of daily work for prototyping, exploring and building internal tools. Craft still matters most, so you should know where AI falls short, and you will help shape how the team uses it.

Remote-first in Europe, with the option of working from an office in Oslo or getting a co-working pass on demand.

The company is an equal opportunities employer and encourages applications even if you do not meet every requirement.

Benefits

  • An early-stage climate tech startup with global ambitions as it scales.
  • Competitive compensation, including an attractive employee option program.
  • Best-in-class AI tooling.
  • Dedicated time to build your AI skills, an internal skills library you can contribute to, and a tooling budget to work properly.
  • Three annual off-sites in interesting locations.
  • A flexible, human-first culture.
  • A stipend for setting up your home office.
