Description

The R&D Data Science group is hiring a Senior Data Scientist for its Pharmaceutical Sciences & Translational Safety (PSTS) organization.

The role sits in Data Analytics & Computational Sciences, under Data Science, in the Scientific/Technology category.

The company is a healthcare business working across Innovative Medicine and MedTech.

You will combine machine learning, data engineering and subject knowledge to produce AI-ready datasets and models that support safety evaluations and translational research.

You will work daily with toxicologists, PK/PD specialists, in vivo researchers and safety professionals, and the R&D Data Science organization is growing quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Build and deploy ML and AI models for safety signal detection, dose selection, PK/PD modeling, toxicology findings and translational interpretation.
  • Apply representation learning, predictive modeling and multivariate analysis to in vivo, in vitro, exposure-response and pathology data.
  • Plan modeling approaches with scientific experts so they match PSTS decision points.
  • Apply the model governance, versioning and validation standards used across R&D AI.
  • Create and maintain scalable pipelines that pull PSTS data sources such as toxicology studies, PK/PD datasets, biomarker readouts and animal study repositories.
  • Turn raw experimental output into standardized, analysis-ready and AI-ready datasets using Python, R and cloud-native services.
  • Help shape harmonized scientific data models with data engineering and ontology teams.
  • Work with toxicology, DMPK and safety stakeholders to understand study context and convert study designs into computing requirements.
  • Use knowledge of mechanism-based toxicology, exposure-response and in vivo study structure to guide data transformations and models.
  • Improve comparability across studies with standard terminology, metadata practices and quality checks.
  • Coordinate with PSTS experts, R&D Data Science teams and platform architects to deliver scalable, high-quality data solutions.

Requirements

  • Hold an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in data science, computational biology, toxicology, pharmacology, biomedical engineering, computer science or a related field.
  • Have 2+ years of experience applying machine learning and/or data engineering to scientific or biomedical data.
  • Be proficient in Python and/or R, plus SQL and modern data engineering tools such as cloud computing, workflow orchestration and version control.
  • Have built, evaluated and deployed ML model pipelines.
  • Have worked with biological, toxicology, PK/PD or in vivo datasets.
  • Have strong communication and problem-solving skills and adapt well to changing scientific challenges in pharmaceutical R&D.
  • Preferred: experience in safety sciences, ADME/DMPK, toxicogenomics or biomarker analytics.
  • Preferred: familiarity with scientific data formats such as assay outputs, histopathology data and PK time-course datasets.
  • Preferred: exposure to ontologies, semantic technologies or knowledge graph integration in science.
  • Preferred: experience with cloud data architectures such as AWS S3, Snowflake or Redshift.
  • Preferred: understanding of regulatory data standards such as SEND or CDISC.
  • Preferred skills: advanced analytics, business intelligence (BI), coaching, collaboration, critical thinking, data analysis, database management, data privacy standards, data reporting, data savvy, data science, data visualization, econometric models, process improvements, technical credibility, technologically savvy and workflow analysis.

Conditions

Locations: Beerse or Antwerp, Belgium; Cornellà de Llobregat or Barcelona, Spain; Madrid, Spain; and Spring House, Pennsylvania, United States of America.

The company is committed to an inclusive workplace that respects each person's diversity and dignity, and provides interview accommodations on request.

Benefits

  • Eligibility for the company's long-term incentive program.
  • Participation in the consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)), subject to plan terms.
  • Time off, subject to policies and date of hire: vacation of 120 hours per calendar year.
  • Sick time of 40 hours per calendar year, or 48 hours for Colorado residents and 56 hours for Washington residents.
  • Holiday pay, including floating holidays, of 13 days per calendar year.
  • Work, personal and family time of up to 40 hours per calendar year.
  • Parental leave of 480 hours within one year of the birth, adoption or foster care of a child.
  • Bereavement leave of 240 hours for an immediate family member and 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year.
  • Caregiver leave of 80 hours in a 52-week rolling period, plus 10 days.
  • Volunteer leave of 32 hours per calendar year.
  • Military spouse time off of 80 hours per calendar year.
