Senior C Developer

Description

You will be a hands-on engineer on a large datacenter migration that moves a long-running payments platform from AIX to Linux (RedHat), with applications refactored for AWS.

Your work covers analysing, refactoring and consolidating C applications, using solid systems knowledge to reason about behaviour and deliver on your own.

After the migration, you can grow into ongoing BAU, project and client-integration work on the same platform.

Responsibilities

• Design, estimate and build technical solutions for medium and high complexity applications.
• Take part in every stage of the application development lifecycle.
• Work with project stakeholders to clarify requirements, processes, architecture and priorities.
• Recommend and promote industry standards, tools and practices such as DevOps to produce well-built software.
• Suggest improvements and raise risks and issues tied to development work.
• Review the work of other developers on the team.
• Pick up new technologies, practices and tools when they suit the project.
• Pass on what you learn from projects to others.
• Shape the thinking of the team, customers and suppliers.
• Make decisions that affect project outcomes and team goals.
• Propose and design solutions on your own initiative.
• Explain solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical people.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on software development, with proven depth in plain C.
• Solid UNIX background on AIX and Linux (RedHat), including porting and refactoring applications between them.
• Shell scripting in Korn shell (ksh) and Bash for building, running and deploying across UNIX systems.
• Working knowledge of the C build and debug toolchain: Make, gcc, gdb and core dump analysis.
• Track record of refactoring and consolidating applications, including redesign during a migration.
• Self-directed, able to own work from start to finish.
• Clear communicator who can explain solutions to technical and non-technical audiences.
• SQL and relational databases (DB2, Oracle), including embedded SQL (ProC / ESQL/C) in C code.
• Experience with sockets, TCP/IP and inter-process communication for integrations and messaging.
• Awareness of porting issues between AIX on POWER and Linux on x86, such as endianness, data type sizes and compiler differences.
• Knowledge of payments and financial transaction processing, such as ISO 8583, card and transaction switching and PCI DSS.
• Git and GitHub, as the project is moving source control from SCCS to GitHub.
• Exposure to Harness or a similar enterprise CI/CD tool such as Jenkins.
• Familiarity with AWS, since the migrated applications will run in the cloud while databases stay in a payments datacenter.
• Exposure to Linux administration, Docker or containers, or Terraform and infrastructure as code on the cloud target.
• Experience integrating with external clients and third-party systems.
