Senior C Developer

Description

You will be a hands-on engineer on a large datacenter migration that moves a long-lived payments platform from UNIX/AIX to Linux (RedHat), with applications refactored for AWS.

You will analyse, refactor and consolidate C applications, using solid systems knowledge to reason about behaviour and working independently.

After the migration, there is room to take on long-term BAU, project and client-integration work on the same platform.

The platform's databases are hosted in a payments datacenter.

The company has operated for over two decades, combining engineering skill and industry knowledge to build digital platforms for large brands across industries.

Responsibilities

• Design, estimate and build technical solutions for applications of medium to high complexity.
• Take part in every phase of the application development lifecycle.
• Help stakeholders clarify requirements, processes, architecture and priorities.
• Advocate IT industry standards, tools and practices such as DevOps to produce well-engineered software.
• Suggest improvements and raise risks and issues tied to development work.
• Review the work of other developers on the team.
• Pick up new technologies, practices and tools when they suit the project.
• Pass on what you learn from projects to others.
• Manage others' work and allocate resources.
• Shape the thinking of the team, customers and suppliers.
• Make decisions that affect project success and team goals.
• Propose and design solutions on your own.
• Explain solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

• 5+ years of hands-on software development, with clear, provable depth in plain C.
• Strong UNIX skills across AIX and Linux (RedHat), and a track record of porting and refactoring applications from AIX to RedHat Linux.
• Shell scripting in Korn (ksh) and Bash for building, running and deploying across UNIX systems.
• Confident use of the C build and debug toolchain: Make/Makefiles, gcc, gdb and core-dump analysis.
• Experience refactoring and consolidating applications, including redesign during a migration.
• A self-starting mindset, able to work autonomously and own work from start to finish.
• Clear communication, able to explain solutions to technical and non-technical people.
• SQL and relational databases (DB2, Oracle), including embedded SQL (ProC / ESQL/C) in C applications.
• Working knowledge of sockets, TCP/IP and inter-process communication (IPC) for integrations and messaging.
• Awareness of porting issues between AIX (POWER) and Linux (x86), such as endianness, data-type sizes and compiler differences.
• Payments or financial transaction processing knowledge, such as ISO 8583, card and transaction switching or PCI DSS.
• Git and GitHub experience, as the project is moving source control from SCCS to GitHub.
• Exposure to Harness or a similar enterprise CI/CD tool such as Jenkins.
• Familiarity with AWS, since the migrated applications will run in the cloud.
• Exposure to Linux administration, Docker or containers, or Terraform and infrastructure as code on the cloud target.
• Experience integrating with external clients and third-party systems.
