Description

The city's Transportation Planning and Management group keeps people and goods moving safely, efficiently and with care for the environment, which supports the economic and social health of residents, workers and businesses in New York City.

The Office of Livable Streets plans, designs, funds and manages streets that are safer, more accessible, more inclusive and more resilient, with a focus on walking, cycling, micromobility and reliable transit.

The Cycling & Micromobility Unit runs the largest on-street bicycle network in the country, with more than 1,500 lane-miles. Its work centres on redesigning city streets to make the network safer and to grow bike ridership.

This role supports the unit's research program and the upkeep of its micromobility demand model, along with the data and sensors that feed it. It reports to the Research & Analytics Lead.

The title is City Research Scientist, job code 21744.

Responsibilities

  • Build, document, update and run modeling scenarios for the micromobility demand model.
  • Update the base network inputs for the model.
  • Record every model update and maintenance task in detail.
  • Help collect and manage the data the model needs, including maintaining and growing the computer vision sensor network.
  • Handle the administrative side of grants and of projects led by consultants or research partners, and make sure deliverables and objectives are met.
  • Represent the unit in research initiatives and technical working groups.
  • Take part in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work with unit staff on short-term research assignments.
  • Meet with consultants, contractors or in-house units to review sensor performance, equipment status, maintenance needs and operational issues.
  • Schedule installations and maintenance, resolve technical problems, and monitor data collection and access.

Requirements

  • Assignment Level I: a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of physical, biological or environmental science, or in public health.
  • Assignment Level II and above, one of: a doctorate from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of physical, biological, environmental or social science, plus one year of full-time supervisory, administrative or research experience in that field.
  • Assignment Level II and above, or: a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of physical, biological, environmental or social science, plus three years of full-time responsible research experience in that field.
  • Assignment Level II and above, or: education and/or experience equivalent to either option above. In every case you need at least a master's degree in a relevant field and at least two years of the research experience described in the second option.
  • Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can replace the experience required in the first two options.
