Description

The role is hybrid, with an expectation of about 2 days per week on average in a company office.

The company is an edge-to-cloud business that helps customers connect, protect, analyze and act on their data and applications, from edge to cloud.

The team builds the system management and monitoring tools that run on Debian-based Linux machines, and this principal-level role leads that work.

You will write the software that keeps the operating system running, with a high degree of influence over the tooling and architecture across the company's Linux fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain Go applications that manage Linux user space, with a focus on Debian-based distributions.
  • Create programmatic tools that track installed packages, handle updates through the apt and dpkg APIs, and keep versions consistent.
  • Design systems that track service status and health metrics, and that retrieve and parse logs automatically to speed up troubleshooting.
  • Oversee how internal software is packaged into production-ready.deb files, including post-install scripts and dependency handling.
  • Lead the move toward more modular, service-oriented system tools while keeping strong performance on Linux.

Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Have 10+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Have expert-level Go skills for systems programming.
  • Have deep knowledge of Linux user space, including system calls, signals and inter-process communication.
  • Understand Linux system management well, including systemd, journald and file systems.
  • Have hands-on experience with Debian packaging and package management internals.
  • Preferred: experience designing distributed systems or microservice architectures for complex system tasks.
  • Preferred: proficiency in Python for scripting, automation or maintaining existing system utilities.
  • Preferred: familiarity with Linux security modules such as AppArmor or SELinux, or with secure boot concepts.
  • Preferred: experience profiling Go applications with pprof and optimizing resource use on embedded or server-grade Linux.

Conditions

Location: United States, with a base salary of USD 178,000 to 361,000 per year in California.

Actual offers may vary based on location, experience, education, training and skill level.

Variable incentives may also be offered on top of base salary.
