Description

The company is an all-in-one financial platform in Africa. It serves about 20 million businesses and individuals each month with payments, banking, credit, cross-border transfers and business management tools.

As the largest merchant acquirer in Nigeria, the company handles most of the country's point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Its subsidiaries process over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value each year.

In this role you will set the technical direction for the company's POS products. Most terminals currently run on Android Native, but the portfolio is growing into cross-platform work, so you will shape how that happens. The product covers POS terminal software and related apps, including mobile apps for repair scheduling and maintenance.

You will work with product and engineering teams to make sure the technical vision supports the company's broader strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture and design of POS terminal solutions, covering security, scalability, performance and integration with hardware and payment systems.
  • Write and maintain architecture documents and diagrams for the POS terminal systems so every platform stays documented and current.
  • Make architecture decisions for POS terminal software, including how payment technologies and EMV standards are integrated and how hardware compatibility is ensured.
  • Lead development of POS-related applications.
  • Improve system performance and security, with a focus on payment processing and EMV protocols.
  • Take part in planning sessions with product and engineering to make sure solutions fit market needs and business goals.
  • Review code and set best practices for mobile and embedded development, especially Android Native.
  • Define and enforce software engineering practices across the POS and related teams to raise efficiency and developer productivity.
  • Keep POS terminal products and applications stable and reliable by monitoring performance and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
  • Mentor engineers and help them build skills and contribute to the wider technical vision.
  • Take part in hiring by screening engineers with POS, mobile and embedded experience.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in system design, architecture and development, specifically in the POS terminal domain.
  • Strong expertise in Android Native development with Java or Kotlin, including a deep understanding of Android-based POS terminal solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) security protocols, covering chip-based transactions, encryption and key management.
  • Experience integrating hardware for POS devices such as card readers, PIN pads, printers and other peripherals.
  • Deep understanding of payment systems architecture, including integration with payment processors and gateways.
  • Knowledge of software quality assurance principles and how they apply to financial systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex system interactions and adapt to changing requirements.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical topics clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Leadership ability, with a focus on mentoring engineers and driving process improvements in the team.
  • Optional: experience in cross-platform mobile development such as Flutter, and familiarity with other POS application platforms such as C or JavaScript, is a plus.

Conditions

The hiring process starts with a preliminary phone call with a recruiter, followed by a take-home HackerRank test.

Next comes a technical interview with the engineering team, then a technical and behavioural interview with the Head of Mobile Engineering.

The final stage is a behavioural and technical interview with a member of the executive team.

The company is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to an inclusive workplace for all employees and candidates.

Benefits

  • Attractive salary, pension, health insurance, annual bonus and other benefits.
  • A people-first culture where every opinion counts, people look out for one another and everyone is treated as a whole person.
  • A learning-focused environment with knowledge sharing, training and regular internal technical talks.
