Description

The company is an all-in-one financial platform in Africa. Each month it serves 20 million businesses and individuals with payments, banking, credit, cross-border and business management tools.

As Nigeria's largest merchant acquirer, it handles most of the country's point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Through its subsidiaries, it processes over $250 billion in digital payment transaction value a year.

This Principal Mobile Engineer (POS-Terminal) role covers the company's POS terminals and related mobile apps, including repair scheduling and maintenance. Most terminals run on Android Native today, and cross-platform work with Flutter, C or JavaScript will matter as the range grows.

You will help set the direction of POS products alongside cross-functional teams so the technical vision supports the company's strategic goals.

The hiring process starts with a call with a recruiter, then a take-home HackerRank test, a technical interview with the engineering team, a technical and behavioural interview with the Head of Mobile Engineering, and a behavioural and technical interview with a member of the executive team.

The company puts people first, values every voice, and runs regular internal technical talks with a strong focus on knowledge sharing and training.

Responsibilities

  • Set the architecture for POS terminal solutions so they are secure, scalable and fast, and work with different hardware and payment systems.
  • Make architecture decisions for POS terminal software, covering payment technologies, EMV standards and hardware compatibility.
  • Write and keep current the architecture documents and diagrams for every POS terminal system.
  • Lead the development of POS-related applications.
  • Tune performance and security, with a focus on payment processing and EMV protocols.
  • Join planning sessions with product and engineering to make sure solutions meet market needs and business goals.
  • Review code and set best practices for mobile and embedded development, especially Android Native.
  • Define and enforce software engineering practices across POS and related teams to raise efficiency and developer productivity.
  • Keep POS terminal products and applications stable and reliable by monitoring performance and troubleshooting issues.
  • Mentor engineers so they grow their skills and contribute to the technical vision.
  • Take part in hiring by screening engineers with POS, mobile and embedded experience.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience in system design, architecture and development, in the POS terminal domain.
  • Strong Android Native development skills in Java or Kotlin, with deep knowledge of Android-based POS terminal solutions.
  • Experience in cross-platform mobile development, such as Flutter, and familiarity with other POS application platforms such as C or JavaScript is a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of EMV (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) security protocols, including chip transactions, encryption and key management.
  • Hands-on experience integrating POS hardware such as card readers, PIN pads, printers and other peripherals.
  • Deep understanding of payment system architecture, including integration with payment processors and gateways.
  • Knowledge of software quality assurance principles and how to apply them in financial systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage complex system interactions and adapt to changing requirements.
  • Clear communication of complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Leadership that mentors engineers and drives process improvement within the team.

Conditions

The company is an equal opportunity employer and works to keep its environment inclusive for all employees and candidates.
