Mission Engineer II - Grand Rapids

The company makes devices and cloud software for public safety agencies.

This Mission Engineering role centers on working directly with assigned agencies to build technical solutions for real operational problems.

It is an ownership role, not a relationship management role, and you will be embedded with the agency's staff.

Mission Engineers are judged by what they build, whether people use it, and what changes because of it.

Responsibilities

• Spend time with agency staff to learn how they work, which systems they use and what they prioritize.
• Find operational problems worth solving and turn them into clear technical requirements with measurable success criteria.
• Spot where AI, automation, data and the company capabilities could improve agency operations, and look beyond the first request to the real need.
• Build applications, dashboards, workflows and automations using the company products and approved the company tools.
• Apply core software engineering practices such as APIs, data structures, scripting, testing, debugging and version control.
• Use AI-assisted development tools within the company's approved development and security environment.
• Decide what you can solve yourself and when Product or Engineering partnership is needed.
• Move solutions into live customer use, testing and refining them with the people who will use them.
• Drive adoption, measure results against agreed criteria and keep improving solutions until they deliver lasting value.
• Document solutions so they can be maintained, improved and reused.
• Be the agency's go-to technical contact, understanding its the company environment and helping with critical needs.
• Help align technical work on important deployments without taking over from the teams that execute them.
• Coordinate complex technical issues that go beyond standard Support.
• Help customers use capabilities across products such as Records, Fusus, AI Era and the wider the company ecosystem.
• Bring the right people from Product, Engineering, Support, Deployment, Training, Mission Operations, Mission Success and Sales into the work.
• Share successful builds and lessons across Mission Engineering, and pass platform limits and customer insights to Product and Engineering.
• Identify solutions that other Mission Engineers and agencies could reuse.

Requirements

• 3-5+ years of hands-on technical experience in solutions engineering, software engineering, systems, technical consulting, implementation engineering or a similar role.
• A solid foundation in software engineering and a track record of building technical solutions.
• Working knowledge of APIs, scripting or programming, data, testing, debugging and current development practices.
• Understanding of AI concepts and how they are applied in practice.
• Technical curiosity and the ability to learn new platforms and tools quickly.
• The ability to work through ambiguous problems rather than only carrying out defined tasks.
• Clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
• A customer-focused approach and interest in how organizations actually operate.
• The ability to obtain and maintain CJIS compliance and meet the background requirements of the agency.
• The ability to maintain the onsite presence the engagement requires.
• Preferred: experience with Python, JavaScript, SQL, REST APIs, cloud platforms or modern frameworks.
• Preferred: experience with AI platforms, workflow automation, low-code development or data work.
• Preferred: experience in public safety, defense, military, intelligence, government or other mission-critical environments.

Conditions

Reports to the Manager or Senior Manager of Mission Engineering.

Based onsite at the assigned agency in Grand Rapids, with the presence the engagement requires.

Some roles may require legal eligibility to work in a firearms environment.
