Master Thesis – AI-Powered Test Automation for Modern Software Development

Description

The company is part of the IKEA group and works on the software that supports IKEA's range development, suppliers and franchisees. This thesis sits in the IKEA of Sweden Technology unit.

Quality assurance is changing quickly as AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) arrive. Most automated tests still need people to define scenarios, write test cases and keep test suites up to date. This thesis asks what happens if AI can explore an application on its own, generate useful test cases and spot quality risks without being told where to look.

You will study how AI can improve software testing by discovering test scenarios on its own or by generating test cases straight from requirements. The work follows one of two research tracks.

Track one: autonomous test agents that explore web applications, map user flows and generate Playwright test cases from what they observe.

Track two: AI-driven test generation that turns user stories and acceptance criteria into executable Playwright tests.

The thesis may cover building an AI-powered testing framework or prototype, assessing LLMs for creating and validating tests, looking at hallucinations, assertion quality and test coverage, and checking whether browser context, DOM structure or API specifications produce better tests. It may also compare AI-generated tests with manually written ones.

The work can be done in a hybrid setup, with the option to work alongside colleagues in Malmö.

Responsibilities

• Build a prototype framework for AI-assisted test generation or autonomous testing.
• Evaluate test quality, coverage and defect detection.
• Write recommendations on using AI in quality assurance and software testing.
• Deliver a final report written in English.

Requirements

• You are enrolled in a Master's programme in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science or a closely related field.
• You are interested in software quality, test automation and AI-powered development tools.
• You want to learn about Large Language Models and new software engineering practices.
• You like experimenting, building prototypes and measuring how well they work.
• You are fluent in English.
• Experience with JavaScript or TypeScript, Playwright, web applications or AI/ML is a plus.
• Your motivation letter explains why the topic interests you and how your studies or experience relate to software testing, AI, automation or software engineering.
• Submit your CV and motivation letter in English.
• If you are writing the thesis with another student, each of you submits a separate application and names the other person and your wish to work together.

Conditions

You must be enrolled in a university-level thesis course at a Swedish university to apply.
