Description

The team supports high-performance computing and scientific research at NIAID, and this role is mainly about running HPC systems, scientific software and the user-facing services built on them.

Your main focus would be installing, maintaining and fixing the software and module environments that researchers use every day.

The company is a global technology and professional services firm with 26,000 staff in more than 50 countries. It works with nearly every major U.S. government agency, defense and intelligence organisations, and it offers AI, cloud, cyber and software development services.

Responsibilities

  • Run and repair Linux-based HPC systems, including compute nodes, login nodes, storage, InfiniBand networking and the services that support them.
  • Help deploy, configure, monitor and manage the lifecycle of HPC hardware, operating systems and core infrastructure.
  • Take part in datacenter work such as hardware setup, cabling, part replacement and system checks during deployments and upgrades.
  • Watch system health, look into performance problems, and help keep shared HPC resources reliable, available and secure.
  • Support the job scheduler and resource management, and fix compute, storage and network problems that affect HPC users.
  • Work with the engineering team to plan, test and carry out upgrades, maintenance and new HPC technology.
  • Help install, maintain and troubleshoot scientific software, compilers, libraries and module environments for research workloads.
  • Write and maintain runbooks, automation scripts and standard procedures that make HPC operations more efficient and dependable.
  • Partner with scientific support staff to fix infrastructure issues that slow down research workflows or user work.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, scientific computing, bioinformatics or a related field, plus at least 5 years of related experience.
  • 8+ years of related experience is also listed for this role.
  • Experience supporting Linux in HPC, research computing or a similar technical setting.
  • Experience installing and supporting scientific applications, compilers, libraries and module systems.
  • Working knowledge of Slurm or similar job schedulers and of shared compute environments.
  • Experience diagnosing user problems across software, environment and workflow layers.
  • Strong scripting skills in Bash, Python or similar languages.
  • Experience with build and package managers such as Spack or EasyBuild.
  • Experience with containers such as Apptainer or Singularity.
  • Experience supporting scientific workflows in bioinformatics, computational biology, chemistry, physics or related fields.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to juggle several priorities.
  • Familiarity with datacenter practices, server hardware and basic networking is preferred.
  • Hands-on hardware installation and maintenance in HPC or enterprise environments is a plus.
  • Background in HPC, HPC systems and scientific software.
  • U.S. citizenship is not required. No certification is required.
