Description

The company is making a multi-year investment in its Payments Platform, the base for how small businesses move money across the company globally.

The Making Payments team builds products and capabilities that help businesses pay bills and move money in a simple, secure and reliable way.

This is a leadership role across several teams that own product experiences and platform capabilities. You will set engineering direction, shape the roadmap alongside Product and Design, and make it possible for teams to deliver good outcomes for customers and the business.

The role mixes strategy, technical judgement, product sense and people leadership. You will be the technical anchor for the organisation, keeping a clear view of architecture, reliability, engineering quality and long-term sustainability while helping teams move quickly.

You will help define how Making Payments develops as a product and engineering organisation, including payments architecture, the balance between platform investment and product delivery, operational excellence, and building a strong leadership and engineering team.

The company expects engineering leaders to have high EQ, sound judgement, empathy, resilience and the ability to earn trust. You will uphold the company's vision and values and build an inclusive environment where people can do their best work and grow.

Responsibilities

  • Set the engineering strategy and roadmap for Making Payments, in line with Payments Platform and product priorities.
  • Work with Product and Design to understand customer problems and weigh customer value, commercial results, technical health and confidence in delivery.
  • Lead the architecture of scalable, secure, highly available payment systems, keeping a clear picture of system health, code quality, technical debt and trade-offs.
  • Drive predictable delivery through clear priorities, solid planning, early risk management, accountability and alignment with stakeholders.
  • Build operational excellence through service ownership, reliability, observability, learning from incidents, security and ongoing improvement.
  • Balance investment across product work, platform capabilities, resilience, compliance, developer experience and technical debt.
  • Hire and grow Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders, and create room for engineers to develop.
  • Build a high-trust, inclusive, collaborative culture where people take ownership, make clear decisions and act quickly.
  • Champion practical adoption of AI-enabled engineering practices that improve quality, effectiveness and customer outcomes. Explain strategy, progress, risks and trade-offs clearly to senior leaders and partners.

Requirements

  • You have led multiple engineering teams through Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders, and have a record of setting direction and holding people accountable.
  • You have deep technical judgement in software architecture, distributed systems, cloud-native environments, reliability, security and scale.
  • You have strong product sense and strategic planning skills, and can link engineering decisions to customer and business results.
  • You have run high-quality production systems and improved reliability, service ownership and operational effectiveness.
  • You make sound calls on complex trade-offs and have worked across Product, Design, Risk, Operations, Security and other functions.
  • You have grown talent and leaders, built an inclusive high-trust culture, handled conflict well and championed AI adoption. Experience in payments, financial services or another complex or regulated domain is valuable.
