Full-stack Engineer 4 (Manager, IC )

Description

The Digital Commerce & Innovation team builds mission-critical spend experiences that drive major revenue and shape how millions of customers manage their daily money.

The team works with high autonomy and builds reliable, well-engineered software, such as smart merchant updates and card-on-file management that remove payment friction and keep transactions moving during account updates.

The stack is centred on Python, Java and AWS serverless technologies, and you would set the technical direction for it.

The role gives you direct influence over critical financial tools and a part in a major transformation across the company, working with full-stack engineers on open source frameworks and emerging technologies.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a team of developers who have deep experience with distributed microservices and full-stack systems, building solutions that meet the company's regulatory needs.
• Keep up with technology trends, test and learn new tools, take part in internal and external technical communities, and mentor engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver resilient cloud-based solutions that help millions of Americans reach financial empowerment.
• Work across languages and tools including Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript, TypeScript, open source relational and NoSQL databases, Docker and Kubernetes, and a range of AWS services.
• Set technical direction for Agile teams, defining standards for design, development and operational excellence.
• Work with architects to define service boundaries, integration patterns and reusable frameworks.
• Find areas to improve, refactor targeted parts of the code, and help cut technical debt and raise system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by evaluating new tools and practices, in an environment where teams that build a system also own it.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• At least 4 years of software engineering experience. Internships do not count.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure), cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding experience in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools, or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control systems such as Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional development within technical teams.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and fix performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools that go beyond basic code completion to speed up your work.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Conditions

Base pay for full-time roles in McLean, VA is $197,300 to $225,100 a year for this level. Pay for other locations follows that location's range, and the exact salary is stated in the offer letter. Part-time pay is prorated to the agreed hours.
