Full-stack Engineer 4 (Manager, IC)

Description

The role is for a Full-stack Software Engineer 4 with leadership responsibilities, and it covers both managing a team and individual technical work.

Responsibilities

• Lead a set of varied technology projects and a team of developers who work on distributed microservices and full stack systems, building solutions that address the company's regulatory requirements.
• Stay current with tech trends, try out and learn new technologies, take part in internal and external technology communities, and mentor other engineers.
• Work with digital product managers to deliver resilient cloud-based solutions that give millions of Americans better tools for financial empowerment.
• Write code in Java, Scala, Python, Go, Node.js, JavaScript and TypeScript, work with open source relational and NoSQL databases, use container orchestration with Docker and Kubernetes, and use a range of AWS tools and services.
• Give technical direction across Agile teams and set standards for design, development and operational excellence.
• Work with architects to decide service boundaries, integration patterns and reusable frameworks.
• Spot areas that need work and carry out targeted refactoring, helping to reduce technical debt and improve system performance.
• Shape long-term technology strategy by assessing new tools and practices, in an environment where teams build and own what they ship.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or a related quantitative field such as statistics, economics, operations research, analytics, mathematics or engineering.
• At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience. Internships do not count.
• At least 2 years of experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science or a related field.
• Preferred: 7+ years of coding in more than two of Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Rust, C and Scala.
• Preferred: 3+ years working with databases and database management systems.
• Preferred: 3+ years with AWS, GCP, Azure, cloud-based productivity tools or virtualization technologies.
• Preferred: 4+ years contributing to open source frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years with front-end JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks.
• Preferred: 4+ years building synchronous and asynchronous APIs.
• Preferred: 3+ years with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code and automated testing frameworks.
• Preferred: 3+ years using Git-based version control such as Git, GitHub or Bitbucket.
• Preferred: 3+ years troubleshooting technical issues in cloud environments.
• Preferred: experience with modern AI-based coding tools and IDE copilots.
• Preferred: 1+ year mentoring engineers and supporting their professional development.
• Preferred: 1+ year using observability to find and remove performance bottlenecks in distributed systems.
• Preferred: experience with interactive AI tools that go beyond basic code completion to speed up your work.
• Preferred: experience leading cross-functional engineering efforts or large-scale technical initiatives.
• Preferred: experience setting and enforcing coding standards and design patterns across teams.

Conditions

Base salary for full-time roles is $197,300 to $225,100 in McLean, VA. Candidates hired in other locations receive the range for that location, and the exact offer is set out in the offer letter.

Part-time salaries are prorated based on agreed regular hours.

The role is eligible for performance-based incentive pay, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI). Incentives may be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan.
