Description

The company's Environmental Restoration Department needs an Environmental Engineer for the CERCLA Program, supporting planning, design, testing, compliance monitoring, and operation and maintenance of groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems at the Livermore Site 200 and Site 300 locations in Tracy, California.

The role requires full-time work on site because of the nature of the tasks.

The hiring team will set the level based on your knowledge and related experience. Higher-level duties listed below will be assigned if you are hired at that level.

Responsibilities

  • Apply environmental engineering knowledge to remediation work across the site.
  • Design, test, and refine cost-effective groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems on your own, making sure every design meets DOE, federal, and state rules and safety requirements.
  • Watch how treatment systems run and find ways to optimize them, such as better technologies, higher efficiency, cost savings, and lower lifecycle costs.
  • Plan and run field experiments to develop, adapt, demonstrate, and validate new remediation technologies.
  • Support operation, design, and construction for existing and new remediation systems.
  • Write and review technical and regulatory documents, making sure they meet federal, state, and site environmental policies.
  • Stay current on new environmental policies and technologies, and understand how regulatory requirements affect cleanup work.
  • Work with colleagues, mid-level managers, and others on tasks that cross organizational lines.
  • Take on other duties as assigned.
  • At the higher level, TSS.3, you will also:
  • Apply advanced environmental engineering knowledge to remediation work across the site.
  • Carry out advanced design of groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems, and help bring new systems online and modify existing ones.
  • Lead engineering design reviews for remediation systems.

Requirements

  • You must be able to obtain and keep a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • A bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering or a related field, or an equivalent mix of education and related experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with designing, operating, and maintaining environmental remediation systems.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of environmental restoration, including groundwater and soil remediation, pressure and flow calculations, environmental chemistry, and treatability tests.
  • Ability to solve moderately to highly complex technical problems with engineering principles and creative thinking.
  • Thorough knowledge of State of California and federal remediation regulations.
  • Working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on both PC and Mac.
  • Ability to research independently, analyze results, and write clear technical documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, so you can work with team members and outside parties, collaborate across disciplines, and prepare, present, and explain technical information.
  • At the TSS.3 level, you also need:
  • Advanced knowledge and substantial experience in environmental remediation, including design, installation, operation, and maintenance of groundwater and soil remediation systems and their components: extraction and injection wellheads, pump specifications, treatment media and vessels, pipelines, and instrumentation.
  • Advanced knowledge and substantial experience with engineering standards, practices, and processes, including writing requirements and design documents, configuration control, test plans, user documentation, and formal and informal design reviews.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication, so you can work with the scientific community, regulators, and stakeholders, collaborate across disciplines, and present technical information and advise management.
  • A master's degree in environmental engineering or a related technical field.
  • Advanced knowledge and substantial experience designing, operating, and maintaining SCADA systems and related technology for remote data acquisition and device control, and operating and maintaining HMIs that show remote schematics, alarms, trends, reports, and device controls.
  • Experience designing, operating, and maintaining groundwater and soil vapor remediation systems for multiple co-mingled contaminants, including volatile organic compounds, high-explosive compounds, perchlorate, nitrate, and uranium.

Conditions

Salary is $154,950 to $196,476 per year.

This is the lowest to highest pay the company in good faith expects for this role at posting time. Placement within the range depends on factors such as competencies, education, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, and organizational needs.

This is an on-site role.

It is a career indefinite position, open to current lab employees and external candidates.

Flexible schedules are available depending on project needs.

Site 300 is an experimental test site on 7,000 acres in rural foothills, about six miles southwest of downtown Tracy and 15 miles southeast of Livermore. It has around 200 staff in engineering, chemistry, biology, and environmental restoration. Staff there may be exposed to the organism that causes San Joaquin Valley Fever (coccidioidomycosis).

Q-level clearance requires a federal background investigation, and cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.

External candidates selected must pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test, which includes marijuana, because federal law applies as the company is a federal contractor.

Some roles require working in Limited Areas where mobile and wireless devices are not allowed, including cell phones, tablets, fitness devices, and Bluetooth devices. Medical devices that pair with mobile devices must follow the same rules. Hearing aids without wireless, or with wireless disabled, are allowed.

The company is an equal-opportunity employer.

Benefits

  • Flexible benefits package.
  • 401(k).
