Description

The company builds reliable, interpretable and steerable AI systems, with the aim of making AI safe and beneficial for users and society. The team is growing quickly and includes researchers, engineers, policy experts and business leaders.

Every dollar the company earns or spends on compute must be recorded correctly in the books, and the volume rises with Claude usage. The data comes from across the company and from partners, including usage and billing, compute, infrastructure assets and leases. New products and pricing models each add another route into the books. The goal is a continuous close with zero material issues and audit-grade controls.

This role leads the engineers who build the finance platform: a single intake point for all finance events, an append-only ledger, and an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once. Its users include Claude agents, which read and write through the same APIs and controls as people.

You will work with engineering teams in Billing, Compute and Infra on shared contracts and APIs, and with product owners and finance operations, who set priorities and define needs. A finance background is not required. Experience leading teams that build backend systems where correctness matters is what counts, and the domain can be taught.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, coach and grow a team of engineers, and set a high standard for engineering quality.
  • Own delivery of the intake point for finance events and its governed contracts, plus the ledger and accounting engine, so each event is posted once and traceable to its source.
  • Be accountable for production services that other engineering teams call in real time, such as the tax and collections services in the billing flow.
  • Ensure finance apps and agents get the platform support they need: SDKs and frameworks, scoped access, SOX guardrails, observability, and capabilities finance requires that Claude products do not offer out of the box.
  • Set and maintain the reliability and correctness bar, including SLOs for services other teams call, tests on key upstream calculations with every change, and daily accuracy and completeness checks from source to books.
  • Agree on technical design, data contracts and APIs with engineering leaders in Billing, Compute and Infra.
  • Shorten the time finance needs to support a new product, program or compute buildout.

Requirements

  • Have led teams that build and run high-volume backend systems where correctness matters, such as ledgers, billing, payments, metering or other systems of record.
  • Have built or run event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay and backfill, and understand what keeps them correct in production.
  • Show sound judgment on platform boundaries, data contracts and API design.
  • Have hired and grown engineers and set engineering standards for platforms.
  • Work well across functions with upstream engineering teams, finance and auditors, and explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-engineers, both in writing and in meetings.
  • Preferred: 3+ years of engineering management experience and 8+ years total in the industry.
  • Preferred: experience building developer platforms or paved paths that other builders use.
  • Preferred: experience with Go and with streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Preferred: experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
  • Preferred: experience building or running a ledger or sub-ledger, with working knowledge of double-entry accounting.
  • Preferred: experience managing teams through audit and compliance work, such as SOX change management, segregation of duties and audit trails.
  • Preferred: experience with ERP or financial systems, such as Workday Financials or Oracle Financials.
  • Minimum education: a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent mix of education, training and/or experience.
  • Required field of study: a field relevant to the role, shown through coursework, training or professional experience.
  • Years of experience required match the internal job level for the position.
