Description

The Logistics Tribe builds the software that runs end-to-end delivery in North America, Europe and Australia/New Zealand, covering ingredient inbound to facilities, delivery options offered to customers, and tracking each box to the door.

Today the tribe is one engineering team of eleven: two staff engineers, a data engineer and seven mid-to-senior engineers. The team reports to the Director of Engineering and owns this software and its production uptime.

Scope moves with where the business needs help, so there is no fixed backlog. Work runs through small project pods that form and disband as projects begin and end, and a typical sprint may split engineers across three projects with three product managers.

Direction is shared between staff engineers, product managers and the engineering manager. Your team spans two geographies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead seven mid-to-senior engineers: set expectations, give frequent, candid feedback, and guide their development, including making the case for promotion when someone is ready.
  • Keep writing code yourself. The role is hands-on, not management from a distance.
  • Raise the team's use of AI by applying it in your own work and introducing workflows where it meaningfully speeds up delivery.
  • Staff projects with the Director of Engineering and product managers, matching engineers to work that also supports their growth. Cap how many projects each person carries and run clean handovers so no one becomes a single point of failure.
  • Take responsibility for delivery health alongside product managers and project leads: plans that are realistic, solid quality, and systems that stay reliable after release.
  • Recruit and onboard new engineers to keep the team's skills balanced as projects and domains change.
  • Promote behaviour-driven tests for every business use case and small, frequent iterations.
  • Help shape team culture as part of a flat, collaborative leadership group.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years leading mid-to-senior engineers in an agile setting, plus 6+ years of total engineering experience, with a record of running development conversations and getting people promoted.
  • Comfort leading people when project boundaries keep shifting, since the team regroups around projects.
  • A backend-leaning background with event-driven microservices, Kubernetes, Kafka, relational databases and CI/CD, plus real BDD/TDD practice that makes large refactors safe. You need enough depth to earn the team's respect, not to be the strongest engineer in the room.
  • Daily hands-on use of AI tools: you have shipped real work with them, know their failure modes, and are willing to learn from others.
  • A product mindset: you can work out the business problem, prioritise by customer impact and challenge low-value scope.
  • Real interest in physical-world and supply-chain problems and in how the operation works. Logistics or carrier integration experience is a plus.
  • Strong candidates who do not meet every item are still encouraged to apply.
