Description

The company is Cell Press, which publishes more than 50 scientific journals across the life, physical, earth and health sciences.

The role is Editor-in-Chief of Device, a journal Cell Press launched in 2023 for applied research on future technology.

Device covers applied physics, computer science, chemistry, biology and engineering, with work on integrated, purpose-driven applications.

The Editor-in-Chief leads the journal into its next stage and sets the editorial direction for the team, guided by a clear view of what authors, readers and reviewers need.

The position is full-time. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Candidates based near one of the company's offices in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, London, Oxford, Amsterdam, Munich, Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen have a clear advantage, though some location flexibility is possible.

If hired in the UK, the role falls under the pay bargaining unit of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Include a cover letter with your application.

Requirements

  • Show proven research expertise and wide interest across Device's scope.
  • Maintain a broad international network of researchers in the journal's field and the ability to engage and persuade them.
  • Think conceptually and critically about a wide range of scientific questions.
  • Demonstrate strong organisation, project management, leadership and teamwork.
  • Communicate clearly in writing and in speech.
  • Editorial experience is valued. Applicants currently holding an academic post who want to move into editorial or publishing work are also encouraged to apply.
