Description

The city's transportation department keeps people and goods moving safely and efficiently with less environmental harm, and maintains the infrastructure that the city's economy and residents rely on.

This job, City Research Scientist job ID 21744, sits in the bike share and shared mobility unit. The unit plans and oversees the city's bike share program and other shared micro-mobility services, including dockless e-scooters and e-mopeds.

The bike share program is a public-private partnership and public transit service, and it is among the largest and most successful in the world. It is midway through a five-year expansion that will roughly double its previous service area and place over 40,000 bikes within a five-minute walk of half of the city's residents.

The team wants a data scientist to help it understand, monitor and improve its shared mobility systems. You will blend analytics, advanced visualization and clear storytelling to turn data from the bike share and shared e-scooter programs into insights for planning and daily operations.

The best fit is someone who can find patterns, build clear narratives and work with colleagues at every level to support better decisions. You will report to the Director of Data Science.

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze bike share and shared mobility to guide current and future planning.
  • Write reports and briefing materials drawn from the databases behind the bike share and shared mobility systems.
  • Check that vendors follow government rules, department policies and contract terms.
  • Build predictive models that answer complex questions about the programs and forecast future needs and rider behavior.
  • Answer ad hoc data requests from internal and external stakeholders quickly and accurately.
  • Build and maintain Power BI dashboards that give insights to internal staff.
  • Turn data into stories for senior staff, managers and other staff that explain both what happened and why.
  • Work with leadership, Operations, Planning and Policy to line up analytics and research with organizational priorities.
  • Give evidence-based recommendations on system planning, managing current service areas and future policy.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and build strong working relationships across the team.
  • Watch data quality, spot problems and protect data integrity.
  • Write and keep up documentation of data management procedures, such as data dictionaries and business rules.
  • Plan, design, maintain and support the unit's internal databases.

Requirements

  • For Assignment Level I, which covers only the physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health: a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of physical, biological or environmental science, or in public health.
  • For Assignment Level II and above, you must meet one of the following:
  • A doctorate from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of physical, biological, environmental or social science, plus one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research role in that field.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of physical, biological, environmental or social science, plus three years of responsible full-time research experience in that field.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to either option above. In this case you must still hold at least a master's degree in a relevant field and have at least two years of the experience described in the second option. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can replace the experience required in either option above.
