Data Engineering Senior Manager

Description

This role leads several delivery teams in the Data Intelligence & AI practice, overseeing a set of cloud data lake and lakehouse projects on Azure, AWS or Databricks and the Leads who run each one.

You will also set technical direction, help decide how AI coding assistants and agentic workflows change data engineering delivery, and lead pre-sales and bids, while staying hands-on enough to go deep when needed.

Responsibilities

• Manage and develop several delivery teams of cloud data management and data lake engineers, including their Leads and Engineering Managers, and coach them at scale.
• Take end-to-end ownership of a client portfolio, covering delivery quality, commercial health, risk and alignment with strategy.
• Define technical strategy and architecture standards for cloud-native data lakes and lakehouses built on Delta Lake or Apache Iceberg, using medallion architecture on Azure, AWS and/or Databricks.
• Lead the practice's AI-driven change, shaping how AI coding assistants and agentic workflows are used in data engineering and rolling those patterns out widely.
• Run pre-sales and commercial work, including solution design, technical estimates, bid leadership and client discussions at Director or VP level.
• Work with the Head of Data Management and BI Engineering on practice growth, covering hiring, the capability roadmap and market positioning.
• Build partnerships with AI/ML, BI and application leaders so your teams' work supports analytics, AI and operational needs.
• Drive engineering quality and DataOps maturity across your teams, including CI/CD for data, infrastructure as code, security, observability and governance.

Requirements

• A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, data engineering, data science or an adjacent discipline.
• 10+ years in data engineering or cloud data management, with some experience leading a small team or workstream.
• A record of building data engineering teams or sub-practices and owning a portfolio of engagements.
• Hands-on architecture experience on at least one major cloud data platform (Azure, AWS or Databricks), including lake and lakehouse design and medallion architecture.
• Solid commercial skills in pre-sales, estimation, bid writing and shaping deals with senior client stakeholders.
• Real technical depth in SQL, Python, Spark, workflow orchestration and open table formats, enough to take part in design reviews and architecture decisions.
• Experience setting standards for performance, cost, security and data quality across several engagements.
• Senior-level communication and client relationship skills, plus a coaching approach for the Leads you develop.
