Data Engineer

Description

The company builds mesh network radio communications for defense, law enforcement and public safety agencies, including in harsh field conditions.

The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of a larger parent company.

The Business Intelligence team needs a Data Engineer who reports to the Director of Operations.

The role designs, builds and maintains the organization's modern data warehouse and the scalable pipelines that feed business intelligence and analytics, with a focus on performance, scale and reliability as the business grows.

Responsibilities

• Design, build and extend the core data warehouse, such as on Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift, covering the physical and logical design for fast high-volume ingestion and quick analytical queries.
• Extend schemas as new backend or CRM features add data points, keeping historical records accurate and performance steady.
• Select and set up the tools for the data stack, such as compute tiers and storage, so the warehouse can handle 10x growth without a full rebuild.
• Build and optimize scalable ETL and ELT pipelines that move data from many sources into the warehouse.
• Watch pipeline health and data integrity, and alert the team to discrepancies before they reach the reporting layer.
• Carry out other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, data engineering or mathematics with 3+ years of database engineering experience, or a high school diploma with 7+ years of database engineering experience.
• Have strong SQL and data warehousing skills, including with Snowflake, BigQuery or PostgreSQL.
• Write solid Python or Scala for data orchestration with tools such as Airflow or dbt.
• Have worked with API integrations and with both unstructured and structured data.
• Bring experience in database administration and performance tuning.
• Be a U.S. Person, either a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident, because clients work under U.S. federal contracts.
• Preferred: a master's degree in computer science, data engineering or mathematics.
• Preferred: experience with non-relational data stores, such as object storage, document or key-value stores, graph databases and column-family databases.
• Preferred: experience modernizing pipelines to reduce technical debt and improve reliability.
• Preferred: strong written and verbal communication, and comfort working independently on unclear problems.
• Preferred: experience building a database from scratch.

Conditions

Work 100% onsite, Monday through Friday, at the headquarters in West Los Angeles, CA.

Lift equipment up to 15 lbs to set up demonstrations and testing.

This is an experienced-level position with no travel and no relocation provided.
