Description

The company does technology work for the US federal government, aiming to make the nation stronger and safer and to improve people's lives.

The company is a technology firm within a global parent and has 13,000+ people serving clients in defense, national security, public safety, civilian, and military health.

This Cloud Architect role is based in Huntsville, AL and covers one program only.

You will set the technical direction for Kubernetes, GitOps, and infrastructure-as-code on that program, lead its move from legacy systems to cloud-native containers, and build security in from the start.

Responsibilities

  • Set architecture direction and standards for the program's cloud environment, for the engineering teams that build on it.
  • Plan cloud adoption and migration, including the route from legacy systems to cloud-native containers.
  • Choose the infrastructure-as-code, container orchestration, GitOps, and CI/CD tools for the environment.
  • Build security and compliance into the cloud design: RMF work, vulnerability management, and controls for identity, encryption, and incident response.
  • Work with engineering teams to settle design tradeoffs early, before they cause production issues.
  • Define best practices and governance for managing the program's cloud environment or environments.
  • Deliver a documented adoption and migration roadmap with clear sequencing for legacy-to-cloud-native moves.
  • Produce a reference architecture and standards that engineering teams will actually use.
  • Deliver a Kubernetes environment with GitOps workflows and CI/CD pipelines that teams can rely on.
  • Implement security controls that support the program's ATO/RMF package, not only a checklist.
  • Create a monitoring and observability approach that shows real cloud performance and health.

Requirements

  • Have 4 years of hands-on work in AWS, Azure, or GCP, including infrastructure-as-code such as Terraform or Ansible, containers and orchestration such as Docker or Kubernetes, and cloud security basics such as identity management, encryption, and incident response.
  • Have at least 1 year in an architecture or design-authority role.
  • Meet DoD 8140 compliance through Security+, CISSP, CASP, or an equivalent.
  • Bonus: hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, or a related field, or have 4+ years of equivalent experience or certifications instead.
  • Bonus: have embedded RMF processes and vulnerability assessments into cloud infrastructure design.
  • Bonus: have used platform engineering tools such as Crossplane, Backstage, or Argo CD.
  • Bonus: have designed multi-cloud or hybrid cloud service models and security practices at scale, which helps you grow into wider platform ownership.
  • Bonus: have worked with monitoring or observability platforms such as CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, or Datadog.
  • Bonus: hold a Kubernetes certification (CKA, CKAD) or a recognized cloud architect certification.
  • Bonus: know National Security systems and air-gapped environments.
