Description

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) supplies 1.1 billion gallons of drinking water a day, runs wastewater and storm water systems, and works to cut air, noise and hazardous materials pollution. It is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, with close to 6,000 staff. Its water supply draws on 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed reaching 125 miles north and west of the city.

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) manages capital projects worth $35B today, with a further $13.6B planned over the next 10-year commitment plan. Its work keeps DEP's water supply running and maintained.

The Water System Capital Program (WSCP) covers planning, design, construction management and construction for upgrading and restoring critical Bureau of Water Supply infrastructure. The program is a multibillion dollar effort that builds new assets and rebuilds existing ones to protect the integrity, continuity and quality of the water supply. It reaches wastewater treatment plants, dams, bridges, shafts, reservoirs, tunnels, pumping stations, ultraviolet disinfection and filtration systems, and related facilities across New York City and its watershed.

The role is an Assistant Electrical Engineer post serving as Assistant Project Manager in the WSCP directorate, based at the Sutton Park office in Valhalla, NY. You will work under supervision and report to an Accountable Manager.

  • Under direct supervision, carry out field condition surveys and write accurate reports on what you observe.
  • Review contract documents, codes and regulations thoroughly and compare them against project requirements to find gaps.
  • Take an active part in field investigations to develop alternative approaches and solutions that meet project goals.
  • Work with the construction management team to inspect construction activity.
  • Complete all required environmental compliance and safety training.

Requirements

  • Either a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university plus one year of full-time satisfactory electrical engineering experience, or a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college plus a master's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university.

  • Preferred: knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products such as Word and Excel.
  • Preferred: understanding of project management principles, especially the procedures DEP uses.
  • Preferred: strong oral and written communication, the ability to meet deadlines, and flexibility in how work is assigned.
