The role is to design, build and improve software that gives the business, the platform and the technology side new capabilities, serving both customers and colleagues.
You will join the company as an AI Software Engineer, helping build the next generation of intelligent applications and platforms. The work covers scalable software, advanced AI capabilities built into enterprise systems, and complex technical problems with real business impact.
The role sits within a team of engineers and is part of a wider effort using engineering methods across the organisation.
Responsibilities
Deliver high-quality software using mainstream languages, frameworks and tools, writing code that scales, is easy to maintain and performs well.
Work with product managers, designers and other engineers to define requirements, plan solutions and make sure new work fits the business goals and integrates smoothly.
Review colleagues' code and share knowledge to keep code quality high across the team.
Track technology trends and innovations, and contribute to internal technology communities that build technical skill.
Apply secure coding practices to reduce vulnerabilities and protect sensitive data.
Write unit tests that check design, readability and reliability.
Advise on decisions and contribute to policy, taking responsibility for how well operations run and working closely with other functions and business divisions.
Lead a team on complex work that affects the whole business function. Set objectives, coach people towards them, review performance against them and inform reward outcomes.
Where you lead people, show the four LEAD behaviours: listen and be authentic, energise and inspire, align across the enterprise, and develop others.
Where you work as an individual contributor, lead collaborative assignments, guide team members through structured work, bring in other specialisms where needed, and propose new directions that combine cross-functional methods to reach the outcomes required.
Advise People Leaders on escalated, complex issues.
Identify ways to reduce risk and write new policies and procedures that support control and governance.
Own the management of risk and the strengthening of controls for your work.
Understand how your area connects with others and contributes to the wider objectives of the sub-function.
Work with business-aligned support areas to stay current on business activity and strategy.
Analyse complex data from multiple internal and external sources, including procedures and practices from other teams and companies, to solve problems creatively.
Explain complex information, including sensitive material or content that is hard to convey to a given audience.
Persuade stakeholders to reach outcomes.
Show the company Values (Respect, Integrity, Service, Excellence and Stewardship) and the company Mindset (Empower, Challenge and Drive).
Requirements
Working knowledge of generative AI and agentic AI, including what they can and cannot do and how they fail, with good judgement about when plain deterministic software is the better choice.
Hands-on experience with context engineering: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), grounding, knowledge sources, memory, prompt design and controlled access to information.
Experience building AI agents and agentic workflows, covering task breakdown, orchestration, state management, tool integration through protocols such as MCP, and human approval controls.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools and coding agents as a core part of your daily engineering, with rigorous verification and clear ownership of the quality of AI-generated code.
Highly valued, but not required: experience integrating several AI models or providers and weighing quality, resilience, latency, security and cost.
Highly valued, but not required: experience delivering AI-powered solutions in regulated environments alongside risk and control partners.
Highly valued, but not required: experience measuring the effect of AI on engineering productivity, quality or business outcomes.
Highly valued, but not required: experience supporting other engineers, coaching them on AI-assisted engineering and contributing to team or community practices.
You may be assessed on risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking, digital and technology skills, and job-specific technical skills.
Conditions
The role is based in the Knutsford, Manchester or Glasgow office.
