Description

This is a full-time AI/ML subject matter expert role in the Information Technology category, supporting a Department of Defense customer at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

You will work with the company's Research & Development teams to evaluate, build, assess and validate advanced AI and machine learning solutions.

The role is for someone with a solid grounding in mathematics, statistics, machine learning theory and data science. The main focus is understanding, testing and improving AI/ML methods, not AI operations, prompt engineering or application integration alone.

The team wants someone curious and rigorous who can look into internally built, vendor-supplied and research-partner systems, judge their strengths and weaknesses, and explain the findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Work with R&D teams across the whole project lifecycle, from concept and proposal review through implementation, testing and handover to operational DoD environments.
  • Carry out Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) of AI-enabled systems, assessing performance, reliability, robustness, security, explainability and operational suitability.
  • Evaluate AI/ML models, architectures and products with quantitative, scientifically sound methods.
  • Analyze AI/ML systems for safety, bias, robustness, explainability and resistance to adversarial inputs.
  • Write technical reports, white papers and recommendations on model effectiveness, limitations, risks and areas to improve.
  • Give constructive technical feedback to industry partners through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and other joint efforts.
  • Work with academic researchers and industry organizations to steer research toward mission-relevant uses and measurable results.
  • Track emerging AI technologies, algorithms and research, and judge how they apply to DoD mission needs.
  • Work alongside software engineers, data scientists, researchers, government stakeholders and external partners.
  • Take part in code reviews, architecture discussions, technical evaluations and experiments.
  • Present technical findings and recommendations clearly and objectively to leadership, engineering teams and customers.

Requirements

  • Be a U.S. citizen holding an active Secret clearance.
  • Hold either a bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Engineering, Physics or a related quantitative discipline, plus 8+ years of relevant experience.
  • Or hold a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or a related quantitative field, plus 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Or hold a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Statistics, Applications.
  • Desirable: familiarity with generative AI technologies.

Conditions

Full-time, regular position with up to 10% local travel.

Based at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, on a DoD contract.

Minimum Secret clearance is required to start.

The proposed salary range is $115,600 - 254,200 USD. Final pay depends on factors such as geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories and wage rates, relevant prior experience, specific skills and competencies, education and certifications.

Benefits

  • Flexible time off that lets you take the time you need.
  • Access to learning resources and continuing education.
  • Competitive compensation and a broad mix of benefits, including healthcare, wellness, financial, retirement and family support, plus time off.
