Value Stream Engineering Lead

You will join the CTO Engineering team and report to the Head of Engineering.

You will lead the engineering capability across a Value Stream, keeping teams tied to business and customer goals while making sure the technology delivered is high quality and resilient.

The role blends engineering leadership with a view of delivery from start to finish. You will help teams work with better flow, clear blockers and keep improving how engineering is done across the Value Stream.

You will stay close to the code. Alongside leading a mix of permanent and partner engineers, you will step in with hands on technical help when needed, including design work, architecture and code reviews, production debugging and guiding teams through hard engineering problems. You will promote technical excellence and make sure solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure and cost effective.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering teams across the Value Stream, setting clear technical direction and keeping priorities and delivery matched to business and customer outcomes.
• Give hands on technical guidance on solution design, architecture, code level problem solving and production debugging, helping teams through complex engineering and delivery problems.
• Promote current software engineering practice in code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, performance, security and resilient design.
• Lead continuous improvement across the engineering lifecycle, using Agile, DevOps, automation and value stream thinking to raise quality, efficiency, flow and delivery speed.
• Build, coach and grow strong engineering teams made of permanent and partner staff, fostering technical excellence, collaboration, accountability and ongoing learning.
• Work closely with Product, Architecture and other technology leaders to keep solutions scalable and sustainable, and find and resolve technical dependencies, risks and blockers across the Value Stream.

Requirements

• Extensive software engineering experience across design, development, testing and deployment, with proven experience leading engineering teams in complex digital environments.
• Strong hands on expertise across the software development lifecycle, including Java and Spring Boot, plus modern frontend technologies such as Angular and React.
• Experience designing, building and running scalable microservices platforms, with a solid grasp of event driven architecture, asynchronous messaging, distributed systems and API integration.
• Strong knowledge of modern engineering and DevOps practice, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, infrastructure as code, performance tuning and secure, resilient design.
• Cloud native engineering experience on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, with enough technical depth to review designs, examine code, troubleshoot production issues and contribute directly to solutions when needed.
• Proven leadership across cross functional teams that mix permanent and partner staff. You can coach engineers, influence senior stakeholders and explain complex technical ideas in terms of business outcomes.
• Experience using value stream mapping or analysis to find bottlenecks and improve engineering flow and delivery effectiveness.
• Experience working across complex digital platforms that span backend services, frontend applications, mobile experiences, integrations and cloud infrastructure.
• Relevant professional or technical qualifications.

Conditions

Permanent, full time role based in Basingstoke.

Hybrid working with 3 office days per week.
