Staff Software Engineer

Description

The company is building a Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) platform that supports the company Digital products and serves more than 2,000 engineers across the organization.

You will lead the design and growth of this platform, owning and advancing key parts of its real-time and micro-batch data pipelines that feed product development, internal tools, and analytics.

The work centers on high-throughput, low-latency data delivery through streaming pipelines, dynamic transformations, and APIs that support application development, AI/ML, and actionable insights.

You will set architecture and engineering practices that make self-service analytics and operational decisions possible at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design highly scalable distributed systems built on event-based and streaming pipelines that ingest and process robot, manufacturing, and clinical data.
• Provide self-service APIs and applications so users can access and work with data on their own.
• Work with core engineering teams to keep data models current as business needs change.
• Promote software development practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure-as-code, and microservice architectures.
• Take part in team planning, code reviews, KPI reviews, and design discussions, driving ongoing improvement.
• Lead within the data domain by setting best practices, mentoring teammates, and improving how data is produced, shared, and consumed across the organization.

Requirements

• Write production code fluently in at least two of: Python, Go, Scala, Java, C++.
• Show a track record of building data pipelines and distributed systems with tools such as Apache Spark, Kafka, Elasticsearch, Snowflake, and Airflow.
• Bring deep knowledge of data platform patterns, including event-driven pipelines (e.g. AWS Lambda), message queues (e.g. Kafka), container orchestration (e.g. Kubernetes), stream processing (e.g. Flink, Spark), relational databases (e.g. Postgres), data warehouses (e.g. Snowflake), analytics engineering (e.g. DBT), workflow orchestration (e.g. Airflow), and search engines (e.g. Elasticsearch).
• Have a solid grasp of CI/CD workflows, unit and integration testing, and deployment patterns.
• Have experience with AWS, GCP, or both.
• Have working experience with SQL and relational databases.
• Collaborate well across functions and take end-to-end ownership to deliver results for customers.
• Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field, with a strong quantitative background in computer science, engineering, physics, or math, or 8 to 10+ years of hands-on experience in a technically demanding role.
• Preferred: experience on a platform team, experience with GitLab CI/CD or other CI tooling, experience with Terraform, Ansible, Packer, and general IaC practices, familiarity with and hands-on use of CNCF projects, and a Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, or a related field.

Some roles may be subject to U.S. export controls for prospective employees who are nationals of countries under embargo or sanctions. The company may need to obtain a U.S. Government export license (which can take 3 to 6+ months) or put a Technology Control Plan (TCP) in place (typically adding 2 weeks to hiring). For export-controlled roles, final offers depend on an approved export license and/or an executed TCP before the start date, which may or may not be flexible, within a timeframe that does not unreasonably delay hiring. Candidates will be told of any steps required.
