Description

This role covers enterprise accounts in Texas served by the Enterprise segment, with the ideal candidate based in Austin or Dallas.

You will work with platform engineers, architects, SRE staff and the VP who sets the technical standard, and design a solution that satisfies all of them and holds up at production scale.

Most of the work is making a move off an incumbent system believable: the architecture, benchmarks run on the customer's own data, and a plan their engineers trust.

The role suits engineers who want hard problems: real scale, real constraints and an incumbent to replace. Prior pre-sales experience helps but is not required; technical depth is essential.

The company is a rapidly scaling start-up, and the team is shaping how it works as it grows.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical evaluation for enterprise accounts, from discovery through proof of concept or competitive bake-off, architecture sign-off, security review and the first production workload.
  • Work with a wide group of stakeholders, including platform engineers, architects, SRE, security and the executive who owns the standard, and build designs that work for each of them.
  • Plan for production scale: sizing, sharding and replication, ingestion layout, tiered storage, cost modelling, and what happens when something fails at 3am.
  • Run competitive displacements against Elasticsearch, Splunk, Snowflake, BigQuery, Druid, Pinot and homegrown systems, with benchmarks the customer's team can reproduce.
  • Own the migration plan, covering sequencing, dual running, validation and cutover, so the customer can see exactly how they reach production.
  • Handle the security and procurement path: questionnaires, compliance artifacts, network and identity architecture, and BYOC or private deployment requirements.
  • Work with Enterprise account executives to move deals forward. You own the technical win, they own the commercial close, and you build the total cost case against the incumbent together.
  • Represent the technical buyer's needs to Product and Engineering inside the company.
  • Write reference architectures, benchmark harnesses, migration guides and objection-handling material that help the team repeat what works.

Requirements

  • A solid technical base in data infrastructure, gained as a data engineer, platform engineer, software engineer, DBA or solutions architect.
  • Hands-on production experience running analytical databases such as Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Druid, Pinot or Vertica, plus the company's own product, not just querying them.
  • A good grasp of distributed systems: partitioning, replication, consistency trade-offs, query execution, and where systems break under load.
  • Working knowledge of the modern data stack, including Kafka and CDC pipelines, orchestration, object storage and BI tools, and architecture-level experience with at least one of AWS, GCP or Azure.
  • A track record of running a technical evaluation against a named competitor and winning it, including designing a migration off the incumbent and handling its hard parts.
  • Customer-facing experience with real stakes, such as pre-sales, consulting, technical account management or a staff-level engineering role that involved customers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, able to whiteboard with a staff engineer in the morning and present to a VP of Engineering in the afternoon.
  • Comfortable with long cycles and many stakeholders. Enterprise evaluations do not close in 3 weeks, so you keep them moving without letting them stall.
  • Willing to say when the company's product is not the right tool for a workload.

Conditions

The ideal candidate is based in Austin or Dallas, Texas.

The role is remote-friendly within a globally distributed company that operates in over 25 countries.

Benefits

  • Employer contributions toward healthcare.
  • Stock options for every new team member.
  • Flexible time off in the US and generous entitlement in other countries.
  • A USD$500 home office setup for remote employees.
  • Company-wide in-person offsites to connect with colleagues.
