Description

The company runs more than 280 data centers worldwide and connects customers to the major clouds and networks. Much of the internet passes through its interconnection network and data centers. Its Internet Exchange is the largest in the world, and its Fabric product holds the largest share of software defined interconnection.

The software defined dataplane team is building new network services by running virtualized compute next to the network on the company's global infrastructure. These services support its Digital Interconnection offerings.

This is a senior staff software engineer role on the next generation networking platform. You will build software and networking applications that are easy to operate, reliable and fast, and you will take part in design and in running services in production, leading on critical initiatives. You will help build the components that shape the customer experience and help create a platform for future cloud-native network software.

This is a new position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an ecosystem of software services that extends the company's networking services through a virtualized compute platform next to the network.
  • Design and manage networking software services in highly concurrent, scalable, distributed transactional systems.
  • Align the technical design of software systems with business goals so services meet customer SLAs.
  • Lead the team in building CI/CD pipelines with solid unit and integration tests, so code moves from commit to deployment in minutes with confidence.
  • Define an observability strategy for software services.
  • Improve system performance and scale with the team, using profiling tools and stress testing.
  • Find technical debt and drive ongoing improvements to software quality.
  • Contribute to next-generation networking proof-of-concept projects with cross-functional teams, producing concrete results that inform technology investment and implementation choices.
  • Work with support and operations teams to run and support software in production.
  • Help shape incident management processes and work with the team to troubleshoot and fix production issues quickly.
  • Build a culture of innovation, excellence and collaboration with other business functions.
  • Join the on-call rotation once software reaches production.

Requirements

  • 7-10 years of software development experience, ideally building and running highly reliable distributed systems.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related engineering field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience building multi-tenant software defined networking platforms at scale with cloud-native networking technologies.
  • Deep understanding of L2 and L3 networking protocols and concepts such as BGP, EVPN-LAN and IPsec.
  • Experience with network management protocols, including gRPC and NETCONF.
  • Experience with containers and orchestration, such as Docker and Kubernetes or other open-source tools.
  • Experience with public cloud services and technologies on AWS, GCP or Azure.
  • Expertise in automating application deployments to Kubernetes on x86 systems.
  • Experience with open-source networking technologies, ecosystems and communities, including forums such as the Linux Foundation.
  • A good grasp of the application development stack.
  • A substantial track record with Go.
  • Experience leading and mentoring developers to deliver high-quality software on time.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, from engineers to executives.
